WFH will make us work more/longer hours
Exempt employees can essentially be expected to be on call all of the time. No boundary between work and home anymore and all employees have the tech to be reliably connected all of the time. Plus it's easier for bosses to fail to have empathy for people whom they've never met in person. You become a disposable robot behind a screen, to be outsourced whenever the whim hits your boss. Long-term, this won't be the good kind of work-from-a-beach-in-Tahiti WFH. This will be the dystopian future. Social isolation. De-urbanization. Outsourcing. Cameras in your home office watched by your bosses. Dirty cars replacing cleaner public transport. I prefer the office, since at least I can leave work at the office and not be expected to be fully “on and ready” once I leave.
Great documentary

Hey guys, I'm currently a student and I have university job where I am a supervisor at a dorm hall. I schedule people, communicate items between my bosses to my staffers, and generally make sure the dorm desk is in good shape. I am a leader and an essential employee needed for the operation of this dorm. The pay is decent for a university job, and I'm gaining good experience, but there is an issue. Because of my position as a supervisor, I get brought issues with the desk even outside of work sometimes. This is usually about finding coverage. Since we usually only have one person working the front desk, if they call out, then we are out of luck. The desk is pretty vital to keep open, so they're adamant on keeping it open. The issue arises when they text either me or my co supervisor asking us…
Was refused a job
I will keep this post short. My friend works at a big company in the food area. Currently there are only 2 workers there. 1 is working his butt off, and the other doesn’t do anything because they do not even speak English. The job is literally restocking, and reheating frozen food for costumers. Not even costumer service is required. I had 3 years experience in food industry and costumer service. Also a bachelor degree and associate in unrelated field. They were going to shut down the food area because that one person is not able to keep up with the work. My application was rejected within a day. They rather keep the person who is not able to learn anything due to language barrier, shut down the whole place, rather than hire a new employee for a job that requires 1-2 days of training. I am just lost at…
Then they got Napster shut down… We do the same and get called entitled babies…
What transitions, changes, revolutions and upheavals are ideal? How does the role of work in people’s lives change? If capitalism is failing, what comes next?
Work schedule flips
I need some advice. When I started my current job. I was planned to work Wednesday through Sunday. That did not happen because someone left for hip surgery. So I worked Monday through Friday for the past 4 months. Monday through Friday works the best for me. The company has another person switching departments that covered weekends. So they have no one for weekends and want me to switch to Tuesday to Saturday. I want to tell them no so I can be with my family and friends on weekends. How should I turn them down with the least amount of conflicts and issues in the future?
I've been working at a printing and PO box store for about two weeks now. The job has a lot to learn and the boss isn't a very good or patient teacher. Every question earns me an annoyed side glance and if I make a mistake- which admittedly, I make a lot- he just stares at me like I'm the stupidest person he's ever met. I want to keep preserving but it's really getting me down, and I fear it will only get harder to handle from here on out. Honestly living off universal credit was demeaning and embarrassing in its own right, but this just makes me feel like a failure of a person.
Should We Be Paid For This?
Not sure if this is the right place for a post like this but I’m wondering about the legality of a few things at my new job (Ontario). I just started working at a cafe that opened up near me. Right now it’s 5 employees, and the manager and his wife running the store. A few days ago he had us all come in the day before opening to see the store and talk about what we would be doing. a sort of orientation. This was about 2 hours and I assumed we would be paid for it because I think it counts as training. Today I learn that he isn’t planning on paying us for it from another girl who asked him about it. I feel like this is wrong but I’m not actually sure if it is since we weren’t open and we didn’t do any real work…
