I'm looking for a job right now and moving at the same time so it's wearing my patience thin that I keep getting phone interviews that follow up with an in person interview. What's the point of the phone interview then? Doesn't just seem like a waste of time for both parties?
I will try my best not to go on a rant about how wonderful a thing The Church of the Subgenius is, but if you've never heard of it…. It's best defined as a “Parody Religion” or a “Fake Cult”. On the other hand, it is a real legal Church that has thousands of members, has books and a radio program/podcast, holds gatherings (called “de-vivals) and even performs mairrages, etc… It was started by Ivan Stang from Texas. I won't go into the mythology/ ideology in depth, and if I even summarize it you would see how much absurdism and humor comes into play, for it is quite a ridiculous faith. In some ways it mocks religion, in other ways it really is one. I am posting this here because one of the central aspects of the belief-system relates to money. And corruption. There is a prophet (J.R. “Bob” Dobbs)…
Back in high school, one of my first jobs was at one of those automatic car washes that pushes you through the wash. I was getting paid $10.00 an hour, and I remember when I got a 10¢ raise to $10.10 (because the new year came around), I was ecstatic. I do remember having to tell myself at first that even though it’s only 10 cents, “it all adds up eventually”. Everyone that worked there was also in high school, and the managers were probably 40-50 year olds. One of the managers was very verbally abusive and definitely favored the boys more than the girls, and it was obvious to all of us. Here are some red flags from this place that I didn’t know at the time. We weren’t allowed to have a chair or even sit down while working in the hot HOT sun, even when our position…
Got fired and banned from building
I got fired from that horrible boss but he banned me from the building that same night and I'm supposed to pick up my check next day does that count as withholding final pay? I'm assuming he's mailing it.
Around Thanksgiving, while having a conversation about home loans and debt to income ratios, a new subordinate in my department let slip their hourly wage. It was pretty infuriating that the rate was one that took me three years to reach, and is only 6% below my current rate. So that means 5 years of knowledge on the specifics of this job role aren't worth much to the company. Spent all of December strategizing how to ask for a raise, but first needed to decide what my value was. Living in a high COL area, decided that it would require a significant amount more than the company will ever be willing to offer. Even in the off chance they will agree to a 45% increase, decided that I also deserve two weeks vacation a year, AND paid holidays. So, nevermind asking for a raise. It's time to get on a…
So I’m a manager
I'm a manager at Noodles & Company, where I have been working for 7 months. I have previous experience in food service & understand how to make customers happy if I screw up. I was just told, by my GM, that “nothing else should be put in this group chat unless it is positive.” What was so negative you ask? Me trying to make the case that if we can't make a customer's order in a reasonable amount of time (i.e. 30 minutes) that we should give them a refund if they request it. Nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering, but I was met with so much resistance that I'm literally in the bathroom looking at new jobs rn. If you want more details, let me know, but I fucking hate the fact that I can't even try to make us better as a store without facing headlong opposition.
I walked into the store and as I was waiting in the line, I got to the counter and I ask with concern how old the kid is. He said he just turned 12. Now why the fuck do these “family businesses” get to abuse a loophole to let their employee’s children work? It’s fucking disgusting. You have to be a sick parent to take your kid’s childhood away like that. Fuck these family businesses. I told him to have a nice day and I took my business elsewhere. I will not support any business that has literal children there. How about instead of taking advantage of children, you hire adults and give them a living wage?
I immigrated about 10yrs ago and graduated abroad over 15y ago, getting an accounting designation would take me minimum 4yrs (because I graduated over 10y ago I would need to literally go back to university for 4yrs before being able to apply for the exam) so I thought maybe changing career to something in IT? Trades? Any career advice? Something I could learn within 2yrs?
