I have an engineering degree from a prestigious university. My former employer was paying me about 42k for an R&D job in pharmaceuticals. I was on a small team, and it was common practice to not work full 40 hour weeks – the majority of the team was allowed to work the majority of their time from home, but I was one of a few who was required to be on site full time. I was working about 35 hour weeks because that appeared to be the expectation, but of course my hours were audited and I was fired without notice. It is what it is, I couldn't really fault the company since I wasn't working the full 40 hours I had promised them, but it also seemed ridiculous and deeply hypocritical to me. Especially since I was getting all of my work done and additionally volunteering for a lot…
I thought you guys would appreciate this

I work for a sporting event company that is hosting a big event this summer. We have about 50 full-time staff members and we knew that our workload would increase this in July. However, today's news was a shock. The CEO sent an email that we can voluntary work on Sundays from 1-4, and starting May, we will be required. This means that I will work 9-5, Sunday – Friday. NO EXTRA PAY (We are all salary employees) I am paid below market value and officially PISSED. Now I am looking for a new job. Does anyone have any contacts for marketing/PR firms? Looking to relocate.
Write up vs fired
Do most companies fire people for bad performance or write them up first? I can understand if it's a huge mistake that would warrant firing but I've often seen write ups first. Not sure why.
How to ask for a raise?
I’m struggling a lot. I have been at this job for 2 years making $15/hour. When I started, I had a small motel room of an apartment provided to me for working there, but my partner and I got an apartment together about a year ago. I’ve been holding on to this desire to ask for a raise because they’re no longer providing my housing, plus I’ve been taking on a lot more responsibilities lately. I feel like I could just talk to my boss about it, but she’s never here! She’s always “working” remotely while she’s traveling. I say “working” because I feel like my coworker and I have to go behind everything she does and fix things like we’re patrolling a toddler. Our office would be nowhere without me and my coworker, but my boss is flighty and does not hesitate to yell or hold grudges against us…
Pto pay instead of time and half
My partner told me his boss told him if he works events on the weekend they will pay him in pto…… I don’t know how illegal this is in Illinois?
