Union working for the company instead of the employees

I worked for a grocery chain for 4 years and they have a union. I started as a cashier at $10/hour and after a month I moved to pharmacy as a technician. The new pay rate for a pharmacy technician was $11.25/hour and I was only part time. I kept asking for full time, but it seemed like they didn't want to pay benefits since most of the employees were part time. After two years I decided I needed to find a full time job. I had an interview and was offered the job on the spot. I told my manager and he asked if I could give him until the end of the day to try to get me full time hours. I said okay and he managed to talk the store manager into making me a full time employee, but I still wasn't making living wage. I tried…

Isn’t the thing about inflation and prices rising for profit incorrect ?

I studied a bit of economics in highschool, which was a decade ago, so feel free to correct me. But i learned then that when you fix the price of anything, you're supposed to find the sweet spot of supply and demand. That is, how much people will be willing to buy what you're offering at X price vs how much of it you can make (if we were to only take those 2 things into account, ignoring marketing, luxury goods, necessity supplies, etc.). With inflation, and minimum wages staying the same, if a random company were to make their prices go up… They'll just make less sales. Prices are only supposed to go up when the supply goes down or the demand goes up. If that's not happening, it's a stupid move that will make the company make less money. By the way, that's why the prices always end…

It would be intriguing to consider an entrepreneurial business model where writers, health enthusiasts, visual artists, photographers, and more work on projects and somehow be decently funded

This could be similar to how the arts were funded in Italy, Greece, France, and in other highly educated societies. There is so much talent and potential out there. How could people use those skills in a manner that is beneficial to themselves and creates an enriched society – in a manner that is financially gainful? We need to not be putting so much of our artistic work out there on Instagram or on blogs. We need to think about how to create more value out of those skills as a society.

The day I turned down a raise.

I worked delivery for a printing company in the late 90s. My first boss was a stand up guy and took care of his people. When he retired the owmer's brother was put in charge and he was kind of a dick. At my first quarterly evaluation under this new boss he offered me a 5 cent raise (under old boss I'd gotten 25 to 50 cent raise each quarter). I told him to keep his 5 cents. He looks confused. I tell him if 5 cents is the best they can offer the company obviously needs the money more than I do and got up and walked out.
