I love this subreddit, but instead of just circlejerking each other about how much we all already know we hate working our lives away for greedy employers and corporations, what are we actually going to do about this? How are we actually going to bring about any real, significant change? I ask because I don’t know, and I’m sure others are wondering the same thing. At some point, there has to come a point in time where we are fed up with being fed up, no? There has to come a point in time when just posting/reading about antiwork on Reddit is no longer going to scratch this unbearable itch. Talk is just talk, and although talk can create a massive social movement, movements will never change anything if nobody is actually doing anything about changing the system.
Creepy GM at new job, advice?!
What is the balance between being polite to your general manager at the job you just started and just avoiding him completely, which I’m sure will come across hella b*tchy. He gives me super creepy vibes but he hasn’t crossed any boundaries and I find myself, like always, being polite and cordial and going along with the awkward small talk cause I’m a people pleaser and want my bosses to be happy with having me as an employee (basically just for the purpose of getting good references in the future lol). But I’m sure eventually, just like all the rest of all the old creepy supervisors out there, he is going to say something just on the cusp of being inappropriate but just close enough to make it easy for him to get away with saying cause he’s probably done it 100 times and knows exactly what he’s doing. And…
Am I being underpaid?
I was recently offered a new sales position by a friend that pays significantly more than my current job. I spoke with my current employer and asked if they could offer anything/counter. After a week of back and forth they came to the conclusion that I’m being paid fair and will not be countering. Now a little background on my position. I’ve been in my position for 3 years and have improved efficiency in that position so that I can complete my duties in about 20 hours. This has allowed me a bunch of free time to pick up additional duties. I now run a department, my own position and am the company trainer. The person who had my position before me was their 20+ years and always needed overtime to complete their work. The average salary for my position in my area is about 50k, which is what I’m…
Also, I was written up for not wearing a BELT to work because it looks unprofessional The final straw was coming into work on the fourth of July, being told to clean the employee bathroom, then go home. So I just said “nope” and left for the day. Was terminated shortly after. Funny thing is I made more from unemployment than I did working there.
Constantly seeing tons of posts about “gifts” with cute phrases or quirky little puns. For the first time, my wife who works at the big giant bullseye retail store came home with a fruit roll up and an uneven cut note. (ironic part it I jokingly said it was probably a returned item and they didn’t want to throw it out… which ended up being the case) But this brings me to my question, if you aren’t doing this shit on purpose then they are dangerously out of touch. And isn’t it also ironic someone is being paid to make and print this bullshit? My wife said at the end of the month they are getting a pizza party… they had a meeting and asked who they would like to cater. (they all voted for a decent pizza and instead will get Hot and Ready pizza from Little Caesars.) Again…
Offered an unpaid job opportunity
Just as the title says.. someone in a group chat I’m in said they knew someone looking for new employees and we’d get to learn about different areas of business like marketing, community outreach, etc while working as a team member. I asked if it was a paid or unpaid opportunity and the exact response I got was “she said if you’re in it for money then you wouldn’t be a good fit.” I just asked if I’d be compensated for my time, not for six figures. I’m also so tired of employers trying to offer $24,000 a year for full time employee with a grocery list of responsibilities. Like, for that I’ll go work somewhere with less responsibility. I’m so frustrated. I hate the whole concept that we should be fine being paid little money if we have a passion for a specific field. I got bills to pay.
Boss uses some made up “standard output” metric to act like basically 1.5 shifts 5 days a week are either fine or employee's fault. Just the other day he was telling employees , that if they aren't meeting the “standard output” , then they should work well over 8 hours , which is what we have in the contract. P.s. Unfortunately, we have a toothless and corrupt labor agency in my country, so he can easily get away with a lot of wildly illegal shit. Not asking for any sort of legal advice, just wanted to vent.
Reminder: good employers exist
My dog has been showing worrying neurological signs. He’s 12, and it was recommended I drive him across the state to some cancer specialists for more extensive testing. It meant I’d have to take the day off. I forgot about it until Monday. And posted last minute on Slack about my impending vet visit. CEO and COO immediately wished me luck and offered to help. My coworkers sent good thoughts my way. My boss texted me tonight at almost 9 pm: “Hey there. I'm sure you've had a long day. Sending my love and support to you and the fam (including the pup)! ” Tomorrow I will be back. No fuss. I don’t understand the petty shit I see here. If you manage people, go watch some Ted Lasso and better yourself. (Also, dog is clear from all neuro and cancer concerns. He has some early stage kidney disease, requiring…
