Quitting as a junior doctor in the UK due to the shitty system

This isn't a satisfying 'I quit my job and here's the message chain' post I'm afraid, but rather a post I'm making to commemorate finally making a decision for myself in a suffocating and abusive system. It does have some examples of crappy work environments at the very least. I love the NHS, the UK's national healthcare service. It provides free healthcare at point of use for everything you could need, and we honestly don't pay all that much more in tax for the peace of mind it gives. But, I finally hit my breaking point. The NHS values a linear, upwards progression system in medicine that is great if you want your life to be predictable and safe, but unfortunately (as with other medical systems), its layered systems breed a hierarchy, as well as abuse that you're just expected to put up with. I'm convinced it thrives on a…

I cannot keep the jobs that are low stress, even the ones that pay minimum wage, because I cannot compete

I only have so many years working under my belt, and have only had so many different kinds of jobs. So I know my own impression is somewhat limited. But what surprised me as I began to have more work experience, was just how disposable I was in workplaces where the actual job was pretty low-stress. What I consider low stress kinds of jobs aren't jobs that are devoid of any sort of challenge or effort, but jobs that are set up in functional work environments where you can reasonably expect to have the tools and the training needed to deal with any conflicts or problems, and that conflicts or problems don't come up too often in the first place. I've worked in environments that were for example, uncomfortable in the sense that they were very hot or cold environments, or required a lot of physical work, but they weren't…

Watching A Friend Get Crapped on

So my husbands friend works in the maintenance industry at an apartment complex. He got the job mainly because my husband was the maintenance supervisor there. My husband is now a director elsewhere. Anyway, they hired some dingaling technician from a nearby property that only ever vendored things out and just replaced things (he never fixed things) as the new supervisor. My friend literally watched the dingalin put WD40 in a dryer (for those of you that don't know, WD40 is FLAMMABLE) 🤦‍️Anywho my friend just got b!tched at for not having enough work orders done and mentioning the previous supervisor (my husband) and the community manager (she) who's a coward, called my husband lazy. Basically she called him lazy because she thinks the new supervisor completed all these work orders (which are popping back up because he didn't fix the problem) that my husband didn't. Just a reminder to…

How do you feel about HR requiring professional references for employment?

Isn't your experience/education and several rounds of interviews enough? There's definitely a weirdness to calling old bosses/coworkers and asking them to take a call about you. And if you've been unemployed for awhile and lost contact with previous references? Shit, some of your prior coworkers/managers could've died of COVID in the last two years (about in 1 in 300 Americans did, leading cause of death in the US). So if your references just aren't there, should you be immediately disqualified for a job? Seems fucked. What do you guys think?

What would it take to organize and protest for real change?

Please take down if this isn’t allowed but at what point is it too much? I would love for the government to have to hear us and stop brushing us off. This is a huge group with shared frustrations and I think we have a lot of potential to be effective here. We have the numbers at least. Writing to my reps has gotten us nowhere unfortunately. Quitting my jobs hasn’t either. What can we do!!!!!!!!!!! (Peacefully, not that I should have to say that but lol)

Help! State agency with inconsistent time clock

This is a long story but you'll see why once you read it. Background: Work for a prison in the state of Missouri employee for 17 years. Started as an officer 3 years later moved to supply/logistics Not perfect dedicated employee by all means but absolutely not trash employee either. Never have had a problem coming in working my assigned shifts. Rarely take time off unless absolutely necessary. Run a department entirely by myself and more than willing to help out any department. Made an enemy out of my Department Administrator 3rd in line from Warden Has drastically overinflated opinion of himself and responds very poorly to anyone how does not support his delusion. That is another long story but made an enemy when he asked my if I paused to consider his opinion when I responded to an emergency situation and my smart mouth told him his opinion was…

I genuinely don’t give a fuck about my job anymore

I've just stopped giving a fuck. I work and study in a trade school where we do mechanic work and welding. I hate this job so much because I don't like working with my hands, I never did. I grew up being a weird, awkward bookworm nerd during highschool who couldnt even pass his PE classes, I can't deal with all of this heavy work now. My clumsy, weak and absentminded nature, along with my lack of interest in anything manual like fixing or building things has made this job impossible for me to enjoy. I've gotten told multiple times already to “stick with it” but the longer I work here the worse my mental health gets, and one day I may end up dead. I use alcohol to cope, meds, but nothing really helps. Everything has lost enjoyment for me. I don't really see a way out. If I…

JHSC at a food factory

I used to work at a food factory as a basic packer. I worked my way up to being a jack of all trades. Eventually I joined their JHSC. My first two meetings I would bring up issues such as “people are dropping raw chicken breasts on the floor, washing it off and putting it right back in the tumbler”. Their response was “that's a food safety concern, not a health and safety concern”. The third meeting I just kept my mouth shut until I was asked my opinion. I responded with “my concerns are mainly with the sanitary conditions of this factory. Our employees are safe and I have yet to see a real safety concern for them. I'm worried about the health and safety of our customers”. The response was “we understand but that's not what we deal with during these meetings”. I quit shortly after that and…

Feeling trapped with the minimum wage

If it was up to me, I would've been at peace stocking shelves, but $200 on 5 days a week can't pay the bills, let alone rent in a cheaper apartment. I tried by best to find a good job that pays better. One idea was serving food which can have its benefits despite the entire tipping system being really shady. Then there's higher education or trades that take way too much time, money and stuff I have to force myself into. Stuff that I can't afford on a whim. And I just feel trapped. The the frustrating thing is that its EVERYWHERE. So even if it might be fun working in nerd shop, that probably doesn't pay well. Then you have certain places claiming to start 15.00 which sounds great until you discover that was a lie, OR there's a catch in cutting your hours so it breaks even.…
