Most jobs in the US are either so specialized that you don’t get any well-rounded transferable experience, or you’re hit with so many tasks that you end up becoming a Jack of all trades/Master of none (While also not getting any well-rounded transferable experience)

McDonald's is an example of this I always hear brought up. Your job can be making the burgers, but this consists of putting a pre-made patty in a microwave and putting it in a bun with toppings. Since you're so disconnected from the actual processing that makes the patties you don't actually learn how to cook or make a burger no matter how long you work there. Likewise, if you're working the job of 3 people but getting paid for 1 you'll probably never be able to deep dive into learning more. You might have some on-the-fly experience picking up someone else's slack or pitching in at another department, but doing so doesn't make you an expert. Just as working in fast food prep won't make you a chef.

3 Days MAX Time Off Requests

I interviewed at a popular restaurant in my town. They seemed friendly enough, typical restaurant with high volume in a mountain town. Expectations are already low going on but banking in on the summer tourist money is always nice. To start out telling me who they are as a business its stated that they allow time requests off for three days maximum. You can be out of work longer but you're left to coordinate any time off with coworkers after day 3. It wasn't a long interview but they asked me to come in for a working interview (very common here) to see how I mesh with the crew and see if I like it too. I said yes while on the spot but after I got home I thought about the time off policy. I have family, friends, and a life. I have to have surgery for my endometriosis…

Our Governments war, but we the Civilians will tend to eachother.

Russia's attempted invasion of Ukraine has once again created a very clear dynamic of global conflict; citizens from all countries collaborating with eachother for peace while their governments throw violent tantrums at all their expenses. Once again we have been split into two- raging governments who love to play chess, and innocent civilians who want no part in the game. There is solidarity from the civilians from Russian, Ukrainian, and Western Governments: the sharing of resources, emotional support, and a mutual fear of the fallout. Once again; there is more allegiance among We the Civilians then between a government and its residents. I don't know why I'm bringing it up, to be honest. I suppose it just reinforces what we must all keep in mind; that our governments will say whatever they need to to make us believe that We, the Civilians, are each other’s enemy-but We are the only…

Job overpaid me by $200

A little background, my company had a bookkeeper when I got hired, she has since been fired. Corporate has taken over paying people out for their work, we were previously using quickbooks for this but corporate switched this week away from quickbooks. On my last paycheck I got paid $1328 due to a bonus I received after having a yearly review. Typically I have direct deposit set up, but this week our direct deposit is down. The check that I received today is the exact same as the last pay period (which is including the bonus). Can/will they come after the over payment if they didn’t put a breakdown on the stub? TL;DR my paycheck is $200 more than it should’ve been, can the company come after me for the extra?

Objection

To why this post was removed I truly believe that the issue of the cost of education, and especially the exorbitant price of medical education in the US is not off topic at all. Many of us were sold the idea that we need to get an education to get a job in order to live. That if you study hard you will be able to get a better, more prestigious job and have a better life for yourself and your family. But that path is paved with massive student loans which will cripple your family financially if anything goes wrong. I understand that physicians are paid well, but they are workers. Extremely few physicians own their practice any more these days – they are employees. And for nearly a decade prior to receiving fair wages, trainees are heavily exploited at every single step along the way by wealthy corporations.

generic “business requirements” forcing me back into the office

backstory: I have lupus which is autoimmune and chronic… when the pandemic came around my area (march 2020), my job sent us all home with laptops to keep working … summer '21 we were all back in the office until there was an exposure and we were sent to wfh again for a couple months. November '21 they brought everyone back in but I submitted a request for accommodations to stay home. -not that unreasonable right? I've proven that i'm just as productive at home….some back and forth with HR and doctors and paperwork… cut to today – and they're officially making me come back into the office starting next week. citing things like “business requirements”… even though people throughout the company (in different roles )work from home. And I've been productive at home for almost two years now. I am so frustrated and annoyed. I am comfortable AND productive…
