My father is terminally ill. Here in the U.S., I need to have worked for an employer for 12 months to qualify for FMLA leave to care for him (to my understanding). There's a good chance I would need to take this kind of leave in the next year because he is beginning to decline. FMLA is not guaranteed, but I am likely to get the FMLA leave because of the type of employer I have and my length of employment. From what I understand FMLA leave guarantees you a position with your company on your return, so I wouldn't totally lose my job. I have time banked so that the FMLA would be mostly paid, at least for maybe two months, but I would lose all of my sick and vacation time doing it. Somewhat good news, for the U.S. at least, right? Here's the rub: I desperately want…
I didn't follow the story after the sub was under lockdown
I work a warehouse job. I drive heavy machinery. This warehouse is at the end of a winding, circuitous, hilly road, which is prone to freezing over with thick sheets of ice during wintertime. This morning, I attempted to report for work, only to find out that a tractor-trailer had eaten shit, blocking both sides of the road. I called my supervisor and informed him that I could not make it to work, due to the accident blocking the only road to the work site, as well as heavy police presence in the area. He understood and said something to the effect of, “Hey, stuff happens. You aren't the only one. Use your sick time. Don't be a hero.” So I go home and then get immediately berated by my parents for not working, despite having done everything according to company procedures, and doing my due diligence in attempting to…
Just another flavor of bullshit.
Just because the US isn’t a carbon copy of Russia doesn’t make us better or any more free. We get screwed all day every day and have become comfortable in the subliminal ways we are fucked over by our government. This is exasperated by a huge gap in quality of life/ the ‘American’ experience of those below the poverty line and the rich, the experience of POC vs non POC, and many other filters of oppression…. it’s easy to dismiss claims like mine because it’s also easy shelter away from the dark side of the American experience if afforded that luxury. As a US citizen I worry that what is happening overseas will be exploited as propaganda and used to further brainwash our citizens into continuing idea that ‘Merica’ is the greatest, freedom loving place on the planet and we are selfish, spoiled, entitled, and un-woke for being dissatisfied with…
Some companies still just don’t get it.
I recently started looking for new employment after closing down my personal business of 12 years a few months ago. (Covid and greed ruined construction). One of the reasons I shut down was I could not afford to pay my workers better and being skilled in construction you should make good money. So I have applied to several places I've decided that local fast food places retail stores are paying starting anywhere between 13 and $17 an hour in my area. So if I'm the continuing the construction field in any way I want high 20s if not more. After all I can go flip burgers for 14 bucks, and not have to use tools or drive my truck or deal with mud and rain and heights and weather and just you know things that are unpleasant. But I applied for an airplane painting position. The ad online said between…
Little background, I work for a local government as a first responder. On Christmas they hired a food truck to make Christmas meals for all the field staff. They worked with logistics to get the meals out to all field staff members. That night about 40% of field staff notified admin of severe nausea/vomiting and stomach cramps. Many called off the next day. An investigation was performed by the department and found that the pork in the meals decimated was bad and concluded that the symptoms were caused by food poisoning from said meals. The people that called off had to used their own PTO including me who was anchored to the bathroom for about 5-6 hours. I only had 2.22 hours of PTO available so I lost a significant amount of income by calling off from food poisoning. I haven’t contacted HR yet but have confirmed that they used…
God Forbid
While I'm at work I consider it giving them my time, I don't clock out for my 15 min lunch or my 30 min break. I feel like if I'm required to stay on the premises during my “free time” then I should be compensated.
I’ve been feeling super burnt out lately, but this is the straw that broke the camels back. Amidst everything going on today I got a ping from my manager telling me to leverage the current Ukraine and Russia situation as a conversation starter to pitch our products to our clients. What the actual fuck, in what world is that considered even remotely okay, especially right now? EDIT: I work in finance
