Why are there Americans fighting for rich people who wouldn’t give two shits about them or their family? Or “the whole I work for minimum wage and suffered so you do too” attitude. America really needs to stop doing “me me” only. It’s upsetting hearing a Nobel Prize winner needed to sell his award to afford his health bills. The leaders leading this country can do a lot better than this.
I'm (34M) an adjunct teacher at an art school, currently teaching one class this semester. The rest of the time I'm a freelance illustrator and I make a decent living. Recently, an art school friend and fellow freelancer (28F) got offered a last minute teaching gig at the university for the rest of the semester, filling in for another adjunct who sustained an injury. The only problem–they offered her $45/course hour while I was offered $63/course hour when I first started. According to the administration, pay rate is determined by amount of experience both professionally and teaching. She and I graduated in the same class and have nearly identical experience, both teaching and professionally, yet they were offering her 66% of what I make. I gave her permission to cite me by name when asking for a higher wage before officially accepting the position. They spent the whole day today…
Started working at a start-up approximately 3 months ago. A coworker and I somehow got into the taboo conversation of salary. I was absolutely shocked to find out that they make $65,000 more than me. We both hold the same position with fairy similar experience in our prior work. This taught me that I was absolutely shit at negotiating. During my interview they refused to give me a salary range and I fell for the trap. It’s my fault 100% Long story short I find out that out of the 5 of us with this position, I am the only one that didn’t negotiate correctly. The rest have a similar salary to the coworker above. So here is my question. Is there anything I can do to renegotiate my salary? Obviously I would never speak about private coworker conversations. It just sucks to realize I’m 65,000 less than my peers…
So I have a friend that works for a hotel chain. They originally applied to one hotel specifically and after working there awhile they now split my friends hours between 2 hotels. It's 1 property with 3 hotels on it and it's owned by 1 parent company. But if my friend works 25hrs at both hotels they won't get 10 hours of overtime because the checks and payroll are seperate. Is this even legal? It's atleast super scummy. I'm in Michigan if that matters.

I just saw a video from the company I work for and couldn't help but think “this is all fucking bullshit.” I work at the North American headquarters for a multi billion dollar company and can't help but think that a big portion of millennials are anti work because of how fake large companies like mine are on social media. They promote lies about themselves to look better in the public eye. Us millennials have grown up on social media and come to realize that everything put forth on a platform is a fake portrayal of a dismal reality. “we've made x number of eco friendly products” “we've got a fun and happy staff” and so on. I think I might be this jaded about work because I know how fake and off base the reality of the company is compared to how it's presented in the public eye.
