to anyone who replies to this, i appreciate you very much!!!!!! sorry about the length. dear all, hello. i am at a point in my life (college) where i am figuring out my beliefs and how that aligns with my everyday actions as well as what i study in school and my career choice. i recognize my privilege, i was lucky to be born into a family with significant wealth. i grew up w a new cell phone, vacations multiple times a year, etc. i am accustomed to that lifestyle and dont want to give it up. i have been thinking about what to study and for me right now its between journalism and computer science or economics. very different! i have been learning a lot about how to budget salaries and realized that the journalist salary would be very low and uncomfortable for me. the idea of making 30k…
Ibbü is a platform by iAdvize that is contracted out by Samsung US to operate the Sales chats on samsung.com. Ibbü hires independent contractors as Experts for various product categories on samsung.com (Computing, Home Appliance, Mobile, and TV). These Experts receive no set hourly pay, just a commission (1.5% of every sale), meaning they are not paid if the customer does not purchase a product on samsung.com. The longer we wait, the more tired we get, and eventually there is just no energy to fucking fight. What is the fucking holdup? We outnumber them a million to one.
Just venting
Just venting about a former employer. The CEO does not seem to view her employees as humans, much less treat them as such. The A/C unit in the store broke over the summer, and even though it regularly got to over 100 degrees in the store and made working conditions hellish, the CEO refused to shell out the few hundred dollars to repair it until months later. They expect employees to arrive 15 minutes before their shift starts AND to do work during that time, but will not let them clock in or pay you them it. If an employee is even one minute late, they are denied any tips they receive for the day, and the same goes for dress code violations. Because of constantly being short-staffed, any part time employees also got scheduled for many more hours than they had requested. Employees are forbidden from requesting off for…
I already hate my second job. Planning on trying to unionize before I quit to be honest, cause the people who work there as a main job deserve better. And maybe I won’t want to quit if things were better. Anyway…the lady who owns the store will only allow us to use vinegar to clean now. And I know vinegar is good for cleaning, don’t get me wrong, but…it seems gross in a workplace? Am I weird for thinking it’s kind of disgusting for the owner to restrict us from proper cleaning stuff? Edit: For the record, the vinegar thing has nothing to do with why I want to unionize. It’s moreso just another example that the owner wants to put as little money as possible back into the store and the workers so she can keep it. Second edit: Vinegar is not on the list of approved cleaners to…
Advice sending company-wide email/survey
Hey y'all, I'm based in the UK and work for a fairly large multi-national company. We are not in the type of industry which would come close to unionising (yet…), very corporate. This year we've had almost offensive discussions around salary raises (2%) and are actively discouraged to discuss this with others… I know my rights in this regard but if I was to discuss this it would create a hostile environment for myself. I was thinking of sending out an email to all European staff (using external email address, VPN, and public wifi) basically sending out a salary questionnaire to uncover pay discrepancies and pay rises this year. I plan to then distribute this information via the same channels. I hope this will be the start of bigger conversation and put pressure on the business…and perhaps the start of a unionised workforce. Is there anything I have not considered…
