As a nurse in the US, I worked 12 hour night shifts, oftentimes extra shifts, had to hold my breath hoping I'd get time off when I needed it, I was worked to the bone. Day shift would occasionally get catered lunches, and us night shifters would get leftovers, that had been left out for 8-12 hours, or a pack of uncooked hotdogs. The coffee sucked.
