Which union to organize with?

My workplace is ripe for unionizing. Most of my coworkers are game. Health insurance went up, raises were 3-6%, they're firing good people for stupid shit. I can't really find a good answer to this. I'm not sure what union to contact. We are in New England and manufacture paint for a well known brand.

Can someone explain the true example of living wage if it’s minimum wage?

I’m asking because I get mixed answers because some say a living wage should be that you can live on your own and/or support a family off of it including all necessities but I don’t know of one country In the world where with the minimum wage with one earner it pays enough for a person to live by themselves or to be able to support a family off the one income with a minimum wage. I have had some explain a living wage as being able to do that and I’ve had others explain it’s about making enough for the necessities to live (healthcare, food, utilities, phone, transportation etc) but living arrangements could be with roommates. I’m just curious what the consensus is here on what a living wage would/should cover.

Unionize or not?

I work in manufacturing as a welder for a company that builds construction equipment. I’ve been with the company off and on for about 5 years now. Since 2020 it’s seemed to have gone down hill. I left for what I thought was gonna be a better job and came back to this company with an offer to make over 25 an hour which is decent money where I live. HR pulls me in a couple weeks later saying that I don’t qualify for that we’re gonna drop you down to the entry level rate of 21 an hour. I decided to take that in stride because of everything else going on in my life but I decided to talk to a United Steel Workers rep about unionizing because of this and the way management is. My only issue is convincing others to join me. The parent company has some…

Left half way through my 12hr shift

Started a new job on Monday. Twelve hour shifts for fourteen consecutive days then you get one week off. We're given a one hour break and two fifteen minute breaks every shift. I don't understand how this is compatible with anyone's fucking biology. It leaves a 12 hour off duty period each day. In that 12 hours you need to fit in at least an 8 hour sleep period. You also need around 30 minutes to an hour either side to take a shower, get dressed, walk to work, make a coffee and on the other side walk home, get changed, do laundry, have a shower etc – unavoidable activities directly associated with your work duties. What if you accrue a sleep debt? People can't sleep a guaranteed 8 hours every night. There is no wiggle room over fourteen days to bank more sleep – leaving you sleeping in every…

this sub has given me courage

this sub has given me the courage to bet on myself. at the end of the day, i am a line cook, but a damn good one. i do what is asked of me and what i am told. i have been happily cooking your 26$ filets and your expensive seafood for 14$ an hour for quite some time. a month ago, i asked for my evaluation at my current job. i have been told “next week” for four weeks now. tomorrow i plan on telling my boss either the evaluation and at least a 2$ raise happens or i will walk on the spot. i will happily support/join this movement and will bet on myself and yall and what we have going here. thank you all for giving me the thoughts and power to do this.

Is irregular scheduling worth the mental exhaustion?

Okay so this isn’t anti-work but just curious on everyone’s thoughts as the sub has decent diversity in jobs. I worked at a bio processing plant and the scheduling is 7pm-7am rotating mon/tues wed/thurs fri/sat/sun on and off. The pay is quite good there, but I have a lot of trouble sleeping and and it’s mentally exhausting working those hours especially on a night shift. Do you guys think it’s worth good pay? It is the most i can get right now, without having to work 2-3 years at a another company to match the pay. the job itself is quite boring as i sit at a computer most of the time, however i also enjoy the coworkers there, and have a decent amount of free time to chill on my phone and relax a little. I have an opportunity to go back and I’m not sure if i should…
