i have years of experience i have a college degree i don’t think that any entry level positions meant to be a way into an organization/company/business should require either of them are you over the age of 18? yes are you able to communicate fluently in english? yes are you authorized to work in the united states? yes do you have a HS diploma or GED? yes BOOM! you’re qualified for 80% of ALL JOBS in the US requiring years of experience, and a college education is just their way of not training you. that’s all this is about: nobody wants to train anymore
And they wonder why people hate the rich
I left my original employer after 3 years for a temp position that was more relevant for the degree that I'm going to school for. I left that job in February. I started my new position in March, but the this position only lasted few months because a large layoff followed quickly after I started. My last day was in the middle of May. I applied for unemployment after the layoff. I really don't like applying for financial assistance but I have a family and it seems like nobody can find a job, even with 100+ applications in. (Ask me how I know.) It is now July and I have finally got word back from the unemployment office. I am ineligible for benefits because apparently I didn't claim my active employer. The job that I left in February still hasn't taken me off of their payroll. I'm not getting paid,…
Promotions– is this unreasonable?
Im in tech at a very large multinational company. I was hired at associate level three years ago. Yep, that’s an absurdly long time to be associate. I am definitely not doing associate level work but I can’t get promoted and I feel pretty screwed over. Let me begin by saying that I will absolutely at the first opportunity dump this job, but tech is not done with layoffs and hiring freezes are still in effect at many places. It might take a bit to find something better. In the meantime, I’m stuck here and I’d like some input on the situation. Please be kind, and also, I’d love strategies to either play their games or fight back (if there is any basis). About 1.5 years ago, my dept lead started putting together various promotion requirements. This involved completion of various certifications where the expectation was that we would not…
Please Check My Math But…
So back in the 80's the worth of 1 dollar then is now in 2023 the 1 dollar is worth 3.69 now, so I thought about it like this. In the 80s if you spend a dollar a day for 10 days, you would've spent 10 dollars. But if we factor in the worth of a dollar now compared to then which is 3.69 now. Then if you spend 3.69 dollars per day, then you would've spent 36.9 dollars for those 10 days. A 26.9 dollar difference in spending power for those 10 days. Is this correct ?
Office Workers Union Advice Needed
Hey y'all! I'm considering an attempt to unionize my workplace due to some recent changes in upper management (cough cough venture capitalist acquisition cough cough). I work for a company in the Video Advertising industry that has ~1500 employees across the united states and internationally. My office has approximately 60 employees that have their work location listed in my city according to our org chart, but I have several team members that work fully remote and report to my office's management. We've all been remote for the past 3 years, but upper management recently called a Tue-Thurs RTO starting after labor day. In the same call they also announced that we wouldn't receive any sort of raise this year (merit or inflation based), despite increasing expectations and work loads. I haven't talked to enough people yet to get a grasp on union interest, but I know a lot of folks…
I feel bad being a hard worker
I understand in a capitalist society I am a cog in the machine. I know I should do the bare minimum and clock out but I can't. I've started a new job for the purpose of management and I'm already planning the ways in which I will improve this place. I don't care about the company but it's food service and everywhere I go the food standards are not upheld and I mean in big ways like touching phones and not washing their hands after. I'm worried I will certainly face defiance and laziness no matter how I approach it. These people understand their shitty minimum wage job and that they only need to do the minimum. I can't stop myself from caring about this. If I'm going to spend 40 hours a week doing something I want to do well and have it reflect that. I don't know. I'm…
