So I’m currently working at a call center and at an ice cream place and I feel so miserable hahaha like I’m not working for fun but I need money since I’m studying abroad and my parents don’t support me economically. Do you guys have any tips, I’m burnt out between law school(which btw won’t assure me neither money in the future or a job apparently) and these jobs. Dealing with customers suck and I don’t even know what to look for anymore since I don’t have a degree/any gifted child on the news skills. Was working in clothing stores for the last year and a half but got laid off by Aerie since I didn’t mirror the company’s values one day before my trial period ended lol. I have, err had, a part time job that was full time in the summer and otherwise just on school release days. Well, I haven't been offered a shift in months, and was asking about hours for summer. My supervisor told me because I hadn't worked in 60 days I was 'separated' No emails, no phone calls, no offers of shift availability… is this even legal?

So I was reading another post in this sub and the OP said something in it that really struck me as a conversation we are not having enough. ​ tldr company found a nice guy to replace me and do 2 jobs at once (lol good luck) after secretly looking for 1.5years for such a slave unicorn. ​ When I think through all of the tests, the hoops people jump through for jobs… interview after interview and then someone gets rejected in round 4. 30+ minute personality tests. Unpaid work provided by the company. I remember a post where they asked him for artwork, he sent a sample, and they got angry that he didn't design something new on the spot for them. I started a job working in IT and while it’s been a great change of pace, it was brought to my attention that it too chatty at work. Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t affect my ability to do my job and what’s more, I don’t interfere with other people’s work. I take my cues. But given a recent issue at work, I’ve decided that it’s probably best that I don’t speak at all anymore. It’s not as though I have a voice. I tried to speak up in regards to my supervisor taking a letter of appreciation away from me (it’s technically my mail) because she felt as though I didn’t deserve it and when I brought it up, my supervisor grew defensive and started yelling. Manager just changed a meeting in the afternoon to tomorrow, then changed it back to a different time this afternoon. We also had 2 stand ups today, in which the first one nobody showed up because they are not in. Director making demands absolutely out of my scope because they have no idea how to do my job, but somehow simultaneously is my superior. So glad it’s almost over.

I appreciate when leaders do create opportunities for fun stuff. But if you have to stay and work instead of taking a half day if you don't want to attend, what does that say? That they are worried no one would attend? Check a box that you are trying to “engage” people? What is the goals of these? Are they forced socialization? A reward? If it's just to be nice, then let people choose home vs the event. We are asked for ideas, but if I have one, it would be rude to expect some other staff person to organize that (always organized by volunteers).
