As a counter to the lovely ‘what remote workers will look like in 2100’ lets look back at what a future office worker will supposedly look like. Remember ‘Emma’?

Working for a small family business – worst idea ever

So I think it’s my fault. I quit my job being a stewardess for something less stressful, easy, and gave me more time to have a normal life and sleep schedule. I was desperate and called in this job and got hired a couple days after. They told me the job was stressful, and that I was being hired for part time evening/overnight. But they didn’t tell me that I was being trained full time during the day. This whole job is stressful. The boss micromanages EVERYTHING. Looks at every email, document, chat message, and interaction sent. It’s normal for the people working there but it makes me anxious because it seems everything I do is wrong. When they said stressful I didn’t know they meant because the boss comes and rants at you for writing the wrong information or something. I’ve only been here for two weeks and I…

Job offer dilemma: Seeking advice on if I should accept or use my leverage and ask my current job to match

I was approached and offered a job through LinkedIn to work for a new startup in the recruiting field. Everything seems incredibly attractive, with a significant increase in pay for me (currently earn below 15k for social media work). I'd have a 3 month probationary period before getting a 12 month contract with a lot of nice benefits. My dilemma is that I actually enjoy my current job and it's in an industry that I want to be in. However, the pay is just not enough for where I live and I'm the sole provider for my family (take care of 3 other people with one being my disabled grandma). Additionally, I planning to move in temporarily with my cousin for a while so I can escape my abusive home and start my life again (more context in my post history). The simple option is to just leave and take…

Manager pushing me to apply for a position

I’m working in a company just over a year and I’ve expressed to my manager on what my goals are. I have told him that I really want to move out of the position I am in and go for a position that will lead me to my goal. Recently, two new positions have come available in the team. One of them lines up perfectly with what i’m looking for. The other one does not. I told him that I don’t want to apply for the one that doesn’t align with my skills (based on the description) however he is pushing me to go for it and telling me that I might not get the other one. The problem is that I don’t want to go for something that I don’t have much experience in. The other position is so much more attractive. I don’t want to piss him off…

Nobody wants to pay anymore!

Remember when all the out of touch business owner, boomers and brain washed conservatives were crying about how no one wanted to work anymore? I think it’s time to normalize this phrase. “No one wants to pay anymore.” Don’t even apply to a job that wont pay a living wage. For too long the standard of living has been in free fall because companies refuse raise wages to match inflation and productivity. If no one wants to pay workers what their worth then they deserve derision and public consequences. We need collective action, naming, shaming, and boycotting of any business that won’t pay it’s workers properly. At the end of the day we are all in this sinking ship together.

Unpaid work on weekends…

My job is an environment where the workload cannot be finished within paid hours. Some of my co-workers take it home with them to finish… My boss even suggested to me that I do it as well!! I'm completely disgusted to be honest. One of my co workers spoke with me about how shes considering doing it at home too and I told her she should not as it takes time away from her kids. We are literally paid minimum wage as well, I just say I'm not paid enough to take this job home with me. I think this makes my boss snappy with me as she knows I'm not going to cave in. I just hate working with such a passion, it feels endless
