I work as a therapist, and I get paid by the client hour. Well, I also have a pretty extensive health history. My current job made me wait 3 months to be put on their health insurance, and gives almost no PTO. Well, my heart decided to go haywire last month, and I needed a cardiac ablation after 3 emergency room visits and a traumatic week long hospital stay. I had to cancel all my clients, and will not be paid a single cent for the time I missed. With what I make after getting a Master's degree, I'm just above the poverty level. My physical and mental health is failing, and I don't know if I can work for much longer. I'm not sure if my situation is legally allowed or not, I assume it is since I'm in a right-to-work state with nearly no worker protections but maybe I'm wrong. We're both bartenders and I've recently relapsed with my alcoholism. Until I get my 2 week LOA for therapy I'm already struggling to be at work at all. He keeps asking me to cover his shifts and at this point I just can't. I asked him to cover a shift or two of mine back when I was sick, and he just ghosted me. Now he's asked me 3 separate times to cover for him, and on top of my relapse issues, I just can't bring myself to help out. I got a promotion in my job that I was vying for. Because of this I had to give up my vacation time to train. I'm with a performance company and work by contact. Now I got moved to a different role and had to train for 2 months. I've been performing in the role for 3 weeks now. Our show manager had some people come in for training for new roles. I was supposed to have the day off but was told I had to come in for the “training”. Training for a role I've trained months on and I've already performed in! All I did was sit around for hours and watch the new people train. Like WTF?! You created busy work for a job that shouldn't even have busy work!

In my office there is someone that makes a terrible, disgusting mess of the toilet. A human being, with feelings and stress and low wages, has to clean that up by hand. I can't stand the attitude of “It's their job” when a small degree of effort can help.

First of, i’m very lucky to live in a country where taking burnout leave doesn’t mean you end up indebted and out on the streets. so this is not a story of braveness. i’m currently on sick leave and a number of workplace issues contributed to it among others very authoritarian management style, lack of respect, managers emotional outbursts, colleague getting fired for having opinions and micromanaging coupled with total chaos in terms of long term goals. the straw that broke the camels back was that i was questioned whether death of my cousin who died in tragic circumstances really constitutes a “family emergency”.
