What’s a good excuse to not go in today?

My last day was Sunday, and now im supposed to be on a break until my new job starts me. I covered a day for my manager every week for the past month, and she asked me last night if I could come in and dish for her tonight because someone called out, and out of habit and my stupid anxiety I said yes. I really dont want to go back to my old job when i'm supposed to be on a break, what can I tell her? Im supposed to go in at 4 today :,)

How many vacations and days off do you take a year? Paid or unpaid.

For the longest time there was a culture that believed taking days off made you a terrible employee unless you were using PTO. As companies begin to “progress”, it seems that more are willing to provide days off. The only jobs I haven’t seen progress are customer facing retail and hospitality. In my last role for a small company, I was constantly taking unpaid days off but I was “corporate”. Our customer facing people were never given days off unless they had PTO (I swear I advocated for them, my role didn’t deal with those employee rules). In my new role, with a much larger corporation, … I don’t really know what flexibility looks like to them but I’m hoping it’s the same. I’m curious if this is just my experience and perception or if we’ve reached a point where going on a week vacation every few months is acceptable.

Ageism at my job

Hey guys, I have a question. So I’ve been working at this logistics warehouse for about 8 months now as a temp, and been working so hard so I can get hired by the company. I was supposed to get hired on the 6 month mark. Now side note, I’m also Hispanic and my English isn’t perfect, but I make due and have no issues speaking with truck drivers, but for my supervisor it’s somewhat of an issue. But now to the real question. I found out that my now best friend, who’s been working for 7 months now temp, is getting hired by the company. I’m so happy for her, but what about me ? So I asked him earlier today if I’ll be getting hired on. His answer was “no, you’re too young. You just got married and will be having kids soon. Will consider it next year,…

New job being sketch about my pay

I started this new job alomost a month ago now. The COO reached out to me on Indeed saying they have a position openthey felt I'd be a good fit for. I looked into the position details and felt I would be a perfect fit. Its basically the same thing I'd been doing for the past 5 years. Agreed to an interview and met with teh COO a few days later. 2 days after the interview, they sent me an offer. Slightly higher than what I was being paid at the moment., but with a note that afte 90 days I would transition into a different role with approx 30-40% higher wage. I verified that the 90 day period would not be a “porbation” period and had a new offer letter sent with this verbiage. Once received, I accepted the offer. (i was not in the office the day Iwas…

Forcing additional personal car insurance or else termination

Employer sent out a document stating no one is excluded including remote workers that everyone must have 100k/300k/100k on their personal car insurance and send the documentation and proof of insurance every 6 months to HR or else we can be terminated. This increases my insurance $200 a month ontop of the 120 I already pay. I asked for a stipend and they are trying to say no.

it was the demon’s fault

I worked in management for a “good friend” who could never seem to keep people. This was a small company. It took about a year and I began to clearly see why. Micromanaging, undermining, lack of communication, being the brunt of all frustrations, and at the very end going behind my back and taking a very new accountant's word against me. My health completely declined, and at the end I had to leave. Fast forward, they ask me to do a quick report because they don't have anyone else to do it. I come back for about 20is hours as a consultant after they find out they have been losing more and more money. I would have said no but at this point I knew it would feel good to see the completely unnecessary mess they put themselves in. It was a mess, and the accountant within the same minute…

Antiwork or just antishitfuckery?

Having lurked for a few months now, I'd like to contribute an observation. A huge portion of posts are pointing out situations that are wrong not because working as such is wrong, but because the lack of sufficiently sound legislation provides no protection for workers in USA. The “work” culture is stuck in 19th century, as are so many laws allowing employers to engage in what i refer to collectively as shitfuckery. Bernie Sanders may appear revolutionary and extreme, but what he's really advocating for in terms of work related legislation, has been pretty standard in most developed countries for decades. It's upsetting to see how much stress is put on so many people and families because of a lack of workers rights protections and pure greed and bad business practices. I just wanted to thank everyone posting for raising awareness, supporting each other and thus hopefully contributing to change…
