Is it over yet?
I knew it was going to happen, so I no longer work with a bunch of angry racists. They always told racist jokes, sexual jokes, and always yelling and cursing at everything and everyone. I knew I would not last there, 5 weeks was enough, I learned that Doing the right thing just gets me fired. I have to make a living, so from here on out I will not be reporting people for sexual harassment, or for making racists jokes or harassment statements. You all are on your own.
I, 23 M, an a Marketing Associate for a local performing arts center. I did not go to school for performing arts, but I specialize in digital content and they are looking to do more with their social platforms. My supervisor, 27 F, is really close with our Associate Director of Marketing- they have matching tattoos, go out together, etc. They also have a friend who works in the box office, and have recently started hanging out with our latest addition to the team, who is also closer to all of their ages. I have only been invited to hang out with them once outside of work- and this was when I first started in September. Meanwhile, my supervisor, the other people in my department, and the box officer go out after every opening night. Never have they invited me, except for a few rare occasions to get coffee or…
Working 2 remote jobs, discretely
Coming off of a 5 month slump. Was laid off late last year just a day before parental leave and have been nonstop applying and pitching – FT W2 work and even consulting via 1099. Went from literally daily rejection emails (after spending 2-4 hours applying to them), getting ghosted, stressing over baby healthcare and our future – to having multiple offers in the last week. Pay is less than I deserve in both roles but if I add them together – it’s enough to get us out of the slump and refill reserves. I hate to be unethical, and I don’t know how to navigate it on LinkedIn (colleagues requesting to connect, HR making new hire announcements) – but I think I can genuinely do both jobs well in a 55-60hr week. Tell me the many ways that it can fail miserably, or even success stories. Curious.
Frustration with Corporate Metrics
One side-effect of capitalism is the modern version of the old “efficiency experts” from a century ago: The idea that everything can be represented by numbers, and you can demand the numbers change how you want. The excuse is usually cost reduction, or improved throughput, or something like that, but it isn't realistic for every situation. Take helpline calls as an example. You track calls with a ticketing system. You can put notes in the system, and indicate if you are working on it, or you are waiting for someone. You can have a priority, so you know which tickets are more important than others. Now, it is interesting in a descriptive way to know how long it takes to complete a ticket. When you define how you want people on a helpline to handle tickets, your goal is customer satisfaction, and ease of use (so, for instance, you don't…
