I'm becoming a single parent next winter and my current work engagement ends in June, so I need to find a new job as well. Obviously I will need to take care of the baby most of the time. That being said, how do I approach potential employers? Do I not mention anything and make sure they have a parental leave option that I like?
Fire Department Cult-Like Behaviors.
Hey all. Just wanted to rant about something for a sec. So I still have my EMT/FF/HAZMAT all that good stuff. Back in the day I was working as a reserve for a small department, trying to get hired with bigger department. I won't go into grave detail, but the fire service is riddled with some very toxic mentalities. It's paramilitary, as well as emergency services, so some of that's to be expected. But there's one facet that just will not leave my craw… There's these tests you take applying for bigger departments, physical and mental. The mental component is mixed, but a common test is a bunch of video scenarios with multiple choice. There are no “right” answers. BUT… your answers are compared against “successful firefighters.” Basically if you THINK like a successful firefighter, you may ACT like one. This was one if the practise scenarions: Crew sitting around…
A man’s gotta eat.
On the way to work for my evening shift, I swung by an A&W drive thru, I got a burger and onion rings. It was 13$… I was born in 1985, I remember subway having a special on sundays in the 90s that offered 3 footlongs for 10$, now 1 footlong is 10$. That is a 200% increase in price. Minimum wage since I got my first job as a teenager has gone up 30%. We are all getting footlonged in our butts. I work in healthcare, our union members voted for a wage increase of 0% 2020, 1% 2021, 1.25% 2022, and 2% 2023. 4.25% pay increase over 4 years (the previous contract we accepted 0%, 0%, 0%, 0%). Inflation for consumer goods is 9%+ this year. My coworkers said “At least we got something”. Inflation is tolerable when the added currency is distributed equally, but wages have been…
Commentary on “no one wants to work”
I’m thinking about this whole “no one wants to work” theme from older people or even younger people that have had life handed to them on a silver platter (or not, and just want others to suffer). Perspective from 24F in America. I’ve been working since I was 17yrs old. I had to work my way through college full time, while I was also taking classes full time. I used to have the attitude of “everyone should be like this, there’s no reason to complain.” Trust me, that’s changed. After graduating college, my degree has become essentially useless unless I choose to further my education, thus adding to the debt pile and making really only $10 more an hour if I’m lucky. “Nobody wants to work.” Yeah, you know what? You’re right. We DON’T want to work. A majority of people in my life have been working nonstop for years…
Dangerous trends starting
I've been lurking around this sub for some time, and was always pretty glad I don't live in the US. But recently I've been getting a lot of job offers that follow the same sort of trends that can be seen in posts here. Like, “Tell me your qualifications and expectations so I can tell you what we pay”, or “Yeah, the description says remote, but it's actually 1 day/week WFH, the rest in office”, or “We actually pay a reduced rate the first few months because of training and you won't be a full-on asset yet” – stuff like that. I'm mostly content with my current position, so I don't pay them that much attention, but I dread having to look for a job again in the future.
Capitalism sux
I work in a hospital system as a lab tech, and last week I quit my job to work at a new hospital (won't go into detail as to why, but it was essentially ruining my mental health to work there). A former co-worker just texted me and told me they are closing down Labor and Delivery (L&D) at one hospital, and our entire outpatient reach (every doctors office, urgent care, etc) is being sold to Quest. They've estimated that the lab is going to have a 70% drop in workload overnight. She said she and several other people are going to be laid off in order of seniority. She had more seniority than me, so I definitely would have been one of them. I don't know, something about finding out a week after I quit that I would be laid off anyway is hilarious to me. I unknowingly waited…
Recruiters and their calls
I applied for a job. The recruiter called me once, no email. Because it was a random number, and it woke me up from my sleep, I didn’t answer it. They never called backed even after telling them to, and still no email. Kinda annoying that you miss one random call at the wrong time and your application goes down the window…
