There's so much wrong with the mass scale our society is trying to run on. The way I see it is that it's ultimately unethical, hurts the economy, and even bad for the planet. We are relying on giant fields of crops, on tired land, tended to by immigrant workers, or native workers in another country, who are paid so little as to actually matter. We farm meats and eggs without respect or regard to the animals, leaving them in poor conditions for the sake of mass scale. The material goods that we buy are assumed to have come from a sweatshop, and likely did. Including the phone I'm typing on. Wouldn't it be more sustainable, more ethical, cheaper, and more efficient to have smaller scale industry? To source as much as possible from the local surroundings, and whatever else can come from further away? For example, I know when…
My boss is undercutting my salary
I was on indeed to look for a better paying job when I saw that my company has put out a listing for the position that I have. There are multiple people at the company who have the same position as I do, but this listing has the same requirements and responsibilities as my current position, but lists the starting salary that is almost 40% higher than what I currently make. For context, I have been with this company for almost two years and and only ever gotten a raise once and it was an increase of about 7%. What can I do (if anything) to confront my boss about this?
Yesterday I was told that I was going to be laid off in four weeks. I was hired for this position a little over a year ago and one of the selling points was that it was a “permanent position” that wouldn't go away in a year. They are now offering me a $4,000 severance package if I agree to a non-disclosure agreement and if I agree not to sue them for discrimination or file for unemployment. I seriously doubt they're doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. So I looked it up and if I was to file for unemployment I would be eligible for $13,000 in benefits. Plus the more people that file for unemployment the more it could make a company's unemployment insurance go up. I'm not too worried about the discrimination or non-disclosure agreement as I don't believe either one is relevant to my…
Got told I can’t work from home anymore
I’ve been at this job for only about 8 months or so and I really like it for the most part. They have been really great! The problem started when my son started preschool this fall and he’s never been to daycare or anything before hand so naturally, he’s been getting sick and the entire house sick A LOT. I have a baby as well and since September we have been sick pretty much with everything imaginable, and have had three hospital visits/stays between the two kids. Covid, RSV, strep, flu you name it we got it. It’s literally something every week. My work has been very understanding and I’ve been working at home around once a week or so, when I’ve been sick as to not get others infected by whatever plaque we currently have. I always get my work done and am responsive. It may take me a…

“Released“ was within 2 weeks notice
Wow, what a shocker. Worked at my job for 5 years and gave 2 weeks notice Monday. Today I asked to leave early due to a family emergency and they told me the would let me know. They called me into a meeting and told me they talked to HR and were releasing me from my 2 week notice. I was in shock. Never been “released” before, especially not within a 2 week notice period. Anyways yes , I know most states are at will but still pretty shocked. Also manager sent an email to the whole department that I was no longer employed there. Sorry to vent.
