Former Employer Sucks

Before I start, I just want to preface that I’m looking for advice, as I’m out of options. My old boss screwed me out of $40,000 in salary and expenses. Before you say it, I should have definitely quit before it had gotten to that point. I know that now. It was my first job, and I had no reason not to trust that she would pay me what was owed. I had seen her bank accounts. I knew what was in there. So, I wasn’t worried. Once it got to a certain point, I couldn’t afford to leave. She has promised me many times to get me that money, set me up on a payment plan, engaged in overall fraudulent behavior, etc. That has never come to fruition. She was indicted by the IRS for tax evasion and fraud. After that, I was able to find employment elsewhere, but…

Perm FT position eliminated but offered new temp FT position or severance – question about confidentiality

I was told today my perm FT position has been eliminated (job responsibilities going to newly created positions that I was not offered). I was offered a temp FT position (12 mths) or severance. All of this was stated to be Confidential…meaning I should not discuss with coworkers. I would like to inform some of my coworkers, as this offer is part of a reorganization of our group that will affect others…no matter what decision on the offer I make. I would appreciate guidance…corporate job in Canada. I have assumed I have no options for fighting current temp FT position.

How does one even report this?

The restaurant company I am going to be leaving soon, engaging in practices around wages that seem off to quite a few of us. For one… managers are paid a salary AND they are also working floor shifts serving or bartending and are in the tip pool. Now this isn’t the way for all managers. Some managers are given like 500$ a week and then told they have to make it up with tips… which isn’t fair to the rest of the waitstaff and bartenders that are missing out on shifts because the managers have to work to make tips, instead of the owners just paying them a decent salary. This is a 5 restaurant company and growing. We are busy. They can pay these people and keep them out of the tip pool… they just don’t. They have employees that have been with the company for over a decade…

Informed my manager I have a cold and I was called back to work in 2 days despite my symptoms have worsen. Is this appropriate?

For context, I work with children and I caught a bad cold and told my manager that I won’t be coming in for the rest of the week, since I don’t want to spread it to the kids. From experience, my cold usually lasts for at least 1 week. On my 2nd day with a cold, my manager asked me to come back tomorrow. I don’t think my manager is horrible or anything, but this seems to be inconsiderate towards the health of the children and mine. What are your thoughts? And what would you do?

My new land lord is an idiot.

So some duche from money bought our 4 plex and is doing something rather idiotic. There are 3 families (including mine) who are renting a unit. For starters, the 4 plex was built in the 1970s and looks as such. Now this douche nozzle decides 2 days after buying the 4 plex he is going to jack up rent and evict one of our neighbors who has a 2year old in the dead of winter in Alaska. The next day, he is in the empty unit REMOVING A FREAKING SUPPORT WALL on the lower level to “open it up” from the entryway in the kitchen. Well, directly above that area is one of the bedrooms. This fucker is going to kill the first person that moves in. Rant over, sorry I am just so mad and needed to vent. Also, I typed this from my cell phone.

Salaried job says I’m not working enough hours

I have a respectable, salaried job for a midsize company, timely/quickly do all the work that is required of me, but don't “create enough work myself that would help my development”. We are required to be in the office a few days a week and wfh the other two. The non-leaders in our dept truly get along really well (like surprisingly well) and so we take hour lunches, go to the gym together, hang around and chat, etc. Recently, I alone was called out for not working enough hours and was asked if I was making up these hours at all. Well, I work more hours and more productively from home, but I want to enjoy my time when I'm required to be in the office. And I'm salaried and am doing everything that needs to get done. And, again, I'm far from the only one operating like this. Vent…

what’s the stupidest or most unreasonable obstacle you’ve had to deal with applying for a job?

I found a pool cleaning job, good pay, good hours, and they wanted me to write an essay about the “greatest accomplishment” of my life. another time I applied for a restaurant manager job and their application portal was 17 pages of filing things out.

Been having a lot of fun calling my boss on his BS

My boss isn’t the worst boss, but he’s definitely not the best. He has a habit trying to get non-production work done off the clock. I went with it for a while cause I was young and dumb, but I’ve been calling him out on it more and more and it‘s working a treat. He’ll often call me after work (once I’m off the clock) to ask me work questions that really should have been answered on the clock. I used to just eat the time, but now I answer something along the lines of “hold on, let me clock back in”. The after hours call happen less and less. The worst problem came when I was studying for a certification. At first, he set aside time every week for me to study; then he slowly cut my study time down and started suggesting I study at home. Except, he…
