rule 7 is dumb also work should be a nessesity not a choice but we need to treat workers better

A few years ago I was hired as the first employee at an industrial engineering startup. I’m an electrician/ engineering technician by trade. I was promised training, opportunity and a guaranteed major bonus after the company was done with growing pains. For 6 monthes I worked every job under the sun: engineering, building, IT, project management, purchasing, sales, R&D and more all with just myself, and the husband/wife owners. Our business was very successful and we had over $300,000 in revenue within that short amount of time. I have to work both days of each holiday for 5am shifts. I already missed opening Christmas presents with my family, and now I have to miss New Years, even though I have a friend flying in to my state from across the country to celebrate New Years with me, and now I have to miss it. My coworker, the only other person available to cover me is not working either holiday. At all, I'm so upset.

My gf had a abcess that was spreading up her face and almost hit her brain so I had to call out the 23rd I texted my other manager in the morning to let him know he told me to find someone to cover my shift but we are very short staffed so no one would do it so I called to tell them that and my manager said come in or your fired and I don’t drive no one does really except my gf and her mom and my gf mom had a flight so there was no way I could get there anyway so my gf called corporate and he fired me I have texts saying I would’ve still had my job if we didn’t call corporate in nh we have employee at will laws but retaliation is still illegal and emotional distress

I work in healthcare and my particular role has been understaffed for the better part of 4 years. I’d typically not ask for PTO during especially brutal times of understaffing but I’m coming to the revelation that this is not my problem to fix as a lowly staff member. I mentioned my concern to my uplines who asked why I was so concerned about this and i of course can take PTO. I sent the weeks I wanted off and they sent back the days to me and asked me to arrange my own coverage. I’m basically being restricted from using my own employment benefit. For additional background, I was almost furloughed in 2020 bc I was told I had so much PTO in my bank. Is it worth going to HR?
