Hey all, love reading this thread and I (22m) thought you’d get a kick out of this one. I left my previous job for a few reasons, the number one being financial insecurity and the number two being my asshole of a DM (24m). Long post, so here's a TL:DR. TL:DR- DM fucks over an entire store, I get to help store serve revenge by planning a walk-out after making sure the HR department is flooded with rightful complaints against him. It started out fine; he was a store manager that I met as a customer, he gave me a lead on a first assistant manager position at another store in the district run by his gf (24f), and I took it. Then he got promoted to DM at the same time I got promoted to SM as his gf moved to another district. Right off the bat, the promotion…
How you format your resume MATTERS
Hi there! I am a former tech recruiter and I have sifted through thousands of resumes throughout my career. A couple of tips: 1)Have an easy-to-read resume file name. First name + last name+ “resume”. Example John_Smith_Resume. 2) Use bullet points!!! Long paragraphs are a no-no and we do not want to read them. We look for keywords. 3) each bullet point should start with a verb. What did you do, and what was the result? Ex: “Created a customer analytics dashboard that helped team increase revenue by 10%”. Feel free to dm or comment if you have questions!
Personally, I have been struggling with finding work-life balance and keep hitting roadblocks when it comes to focusing more on my life and hobbies outside of work. After some work with a therapist and heavy reading on the matter, I realize that my attitude towards work is not conducive to the common refrain of seeing work merely as a way to afford to live AND THAT'S OKAY: I may be part of a percentage of people that are an outlier in that regard. (Note: regardless of what I say further I am still a strong supporter of the antiwork and labor movement that has swept through the U.S. and abroad. I will always vote to support unions and the workers over executives and the oligarchs) In “Jobs, careers, and callings: People's relations to their work” Dr. Wrzesniewski, proposes that based on goal motivation people come to have three attitudes…
amputation
Lost part of my pinky at work. Got sent to the work doctors, they stitched the piece that came off back on and cleared me for work. How can I be cleared for work when I can't use my right hand? I work for a staging company.
This shouldn’t be allowed
I work at a non-profit major thrift store. During one of our meetings, the store manager was discussing about the use of breaks and bathroom breaks. He said we shouldn’t be using the bathroom unless we are on break. I understand not to just go willy-nilly, but the way he talked about it mad it seem like he would take our breaks away if we used the bathroom in the middle of working. Most of our staff is 50+ years old, you cannot indirectly threaten to take breaks away if somebody needs to take a piss a little more than others. I live in a “Right-to-Work” state. He said (I’m paraphrasing) “This is a right to work state. It’s not required to give you breaks. You guys need to start using your breaks for the restroom. I don’t want to have to do anything drastic. I understand and emergency is…
Located in the US. As title says, threatening mandatory overtime if we don’t finish project by the 19th. I work in a warehouse and we’re sending several hundred pallets to new warehouse. Each pallet has to be restacked and counted appropriately. The usual “we’ll have to go above and beyond for our team” is being thrown around. I’m only scheduled as 32 hours a week, but I’m scared if I decline working extra I’ll be fired. I rarely stay late or do over time. Can they even require it?
Scolded at work
Why is this okay? I’m almost 60 years old and I got scolded for something I did that was not intentional, didn’t hurt anyone, didn’t put a bad light on the company, etc. There’s a difference between discussing the matter professionally and being scolded. I’m not a child. I work in a small company that doesn’t even have a real HR person… and the senior staff blatantly favors certain people who get away with not doing their jobs. The only reason I stay is that I have incredible health insurance benefits (I’m in the US) and can’t get Medicare till 65.
I (28F) started a new job at a small company about three months ago. For context, I have about 7 years of experience in another field but left due to health reasons. I took a few months off to rest and decided to look for a part time job, which is how I landed here. These health reasons will affect me for the rest of my life, which is important for the story. (My new boss is unaware of this.) The job ad stated Wednesday through Friday, 8-5, $17/hour. Perfect for me as I was looking for 3 days a week. It was listed as warehouse and delivery work. I took the job and I genuinely enjoy it. However, I have started taking on more responsibility including some accounting, inventory, and sales, on top of my daily delivery route. Fine by me, I like to be productive, but I’m aware…
My new response whenever a retail or foodservice employee apologizes to me for anything.
