I don’t know how anyone can survive doing this

I am seriously considering moving to Switzerland or another country that has a better living / work situation than here in the US. i work 40+ hours a week at 20/hr which is decent for me and i should be grateful but I can’t do it anymore. It’s the routine of coming home tired and having like 2 hours before bed and i prioritize my health so i go to the gym but i come home and all i have time to do is eat and shower. weekends are for groceries and cleaning the apartment. It’s never enough time and one mistake is homelessness or a 7 year mark on your credit history.

I was fired from my tech job for preordering Hogwarts Legacy

I was a junior developer at a tech company, and like many people in the industry, I was a huge fan of the Harry Potter series. So when I heard that a new game set in the Wizarding World was coming out, I couldn't resist preordering it. I didn't think much of it at the time, but a few days later, my manager called me into her office. She told me that the company had recently implemented a strict no-transphobia policy, and that my preorder of Hogwarts Legacy was in violation of that policy. I was shocked and confused. I explained that I had preordered the game as a fan of the series, and that it's purchase didn't say a thing about my personal values, but my manager didn't seem to believe me. She told me that my actions had been reported to HR (I have a few coworkers in…

Ask the cashier for your receipt so you can throw it away yourself? Say no and the cashier has to throw it away for you? I’d like to hear what the retail folks have to say.

I’d like to hear your opinions. I feel like it’s insulting that they have to throw your receipt away for you, but if cashiers think it’s easier for them to pitch it than give it to the customer then I’m all for it.

Might have to unexpectedly having to quit my job but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea

I do a pot washing job and I hate it, stare at the same wall, same sink in the same room for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. It's driving me insane, I can just feel my mental health slipping away. Dirty plates, cutlery and pots, pans, etc none stop coming from a Conveyor belt. My personal hell, I've never thought I'd hate anything more in life. Theres no one to talk to there either so not like I can pass the time with someone either. I've only been doing this job for a month and a half now. Yesterday I got so close to just putting down what I was doing and leaving. Though the bigger issue is with getting to work and my manager. The company I work for has a private work bus that you have to book seats to get on, theres been some…

How to handle boss/owner stealing tips

I work at a local coffee shop, The owner bought the business about 20 years ago, and we currently have a staff of 3,myself included. The owner works with 1 barista Monday-Thursday, and then Fri/Sat it's 2 baristas. She intentionally does this to avoid hiring more staff. I like the position, I love my coworkers, and pay is $12+tips. We're supposed to be getting a raise this year but, doubtful. Long story short, the owner is struggling with finances which are not due to business, and I have a feeling we're very close to going under. Within the last few months I noticed my tips were MUCH lower than they should be, we've been incredibly busy and I'm making less than I was during our slow season. We had a market even for the holidays, it was me, another coworker on a double, and the owner. When we got back…

Time off requests blocked

So, today I put in a request for one day off next week. I figured its a week in advance it should be approved. I asked the manager why the schedule for last year was up on the bulletin board and not 2023. He went out and took a look. “Oh I don’t know where (so and so) puts the template.” He said to look on the schedule of all the employees. He pulled it down and showed me that the start date of the scheduled employees started 1/13/23 to (wait for it…) 2/23/23!!! I was like we can’t ask for time off for over a month and a half!???? I said “well, I’ll just call out then.” He went into like this panic or something and said “you don’t have to do that you can switch dates with someone” I was like, “nah Ill just call out.” He got…

Job role change

I’m a secretary with the largest law firm in America so I am at the lowest position in a company filled with rich arrogant pricks. Our receptionist recently quit and as a secretary it’s somehow my job to become the new receptionist? This was never listed in my job description and I chose my current job specifically because I didn’t have to work with clients directly. I’ve explained my concerns but HR is forcing this job change on me and they told me if I don’t want to do that job I can just resign. Obviously I will not be resigning, I’ll be refusing till they fire me so I can still get those unemployment benefits. I’m just wondering, can they legally do this? Force me into a completely new job? I’m at a loss as to how to handle this fucked uno situation.

It should be unlawful for a company to retaliate against you for working a second job, even if it’s for a competitor.

A few things, if your second job causes you to underperform at your primary job, i can understand penalizing you for poor performance. Or if you fail to notify your employers of the work schedule so you end up not showing up when scheduled. But to penalize someone solely for working a second job is cruel, especially if your first job doesn’t make enough to live off of. It’s like a giant fuck you and a good way to keep people from being unable to get out of poverty.
