My boss didn’t think I’d get offended being paid less than my assistant

I work as an editor in California; I have fibromyalgia which my work knows about. Last week I hired a new assistant, who previously worked at the company, at a $2 an hour rate higher than my salary. She deserves it (and more) and my boss and I agreed to her counteroffer quickly. I’d learned in a conversation earlier in the day that not only had that assistant made significantly more than me in a lower-level role when we were on the same team prior to this role, but that the company changed the pay scale for my entire department except my team right after she left months ago because they were panicking about retention, and I’m currently getting paid much lower than other editors and not even in the editors part of the pay scale. They claim my department wasn’t changed because it’s the only one supervised by my…

I was sexually assaulted by my manager

Throwaway for privacy reasons. We recently got a new manager where I work and he got acquainted with all the workers including myself. He seems like a chill guy, if a bit high strung and high maintenance but what manager isn't? Over the few days he's there I notice he gets a bit…close to me. At first it's just being a bit more friendly with me than the others, which I don't mind. Soon it progresses to him rubbing my shoulders and saying what a good job I'm doing. At the time, I thought it was weird but didn't assume anything of it and just wrote it off as overthinking due to social awkwardness. Eventually that turned into outright asking me very sexual questions out no nowhere like if I was a virgin or what my bra size was or even if I liked older guys. (In hindsight this was…

Non-profit folks- are you satisfied with the work you are doing?

I’ve been in the non-profit world for about three years now. It’s a small shop-me basically- which means I have no boss other than my board and no staff other than volunteers. Our non-profit is local and our funds stay here to serve our community. Our donors aren’t billionaires or even millionaires- gifts of $100 to $1000 are typical with the rare 6 figure estate gift. I find my work fulfilling and consider myself fortunate. If I could change anything, I would love to be more directly involved with the stakeholders our programs serve rather than simply being the fiduciary. Still it’s gratifying to know the money I raise is doing good. I would love to start my own nonprofit that focuses on our local opioid epidemic but that’s still a few years out. Love to hear about anybody else’s experiences in philanthropic organizations. I realize my situation isn’t typical…

Do unemployment numbers realistically reflect the number of people without job income enough to meet the cost of living?

If we are to assume a non disabled working population between the age 18-62 with an equivalent income of at last full time minimum wage. With all the talk about wage, employment and cost of living, I worry that politicians and media intentionally misinterpret the numbers to understate the economic condition or overstate the actual effectiveness of an agenda. where do I go to dig into the details and better understand the situation For myself?

Labor Day/May Day

I think we need a little bit of education about both Labor Day and May Day in here for my US friends. May Day is the true international workers day and honors the international workers movement. Labor Day is a scam made by the US government to force workers to not engage with May Day and instead to have a more isolated holiday in September. It's fucked up and removes us from supporting and receiving support from our international working brethren (while not even giving laborers a day off) The holiday we 'celebrate' in the US on May Day? Loyalty Day. Celebrate May Day. Fuck Labor Day. It is a holiday designed to keep you desperate and isolated.

In the office from 1 to 9 pm on labor day

Just sitting here on backshift seething at my job. I work dispatching technicians to natural gas odors and power outages. Our department never closes or has days off and we always need each shift covered. And yet, we're full time with a 1.25x overtime rate. If nobody ever gets sick, or uses pto, than everybody works 40 hours a week. But the second a shift opens up its immediately on us to fill it and get our shitty overtime rate. Overtime is treated like a commodity and everyone constantly gives you shit for not taking ENOUGH. We have a running list of total OT and the lowest person on that list will get forced to come in if nobody takes it. I have no fucking clue why we're not just overstaffed with part time employees.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day? So Grover Cleveland could own the left.
