Should you always share your pay with other workers?

I know a lot of people here encourage people to speak about pay with their coworkers, as keeping it secret only helps the boss. There are a few issues with this: There is no reason to think your coworkers won't resent them for making more money. Your coworkers may start asking you for money if they know you make more. They can use it against you. In general, I try to hide as much of my personal life as possible from my coworkers. Sharing information can put one in a vulnerable position.

Did you ever work somewhere with a narcissistic culture?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqch_AzqAIw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4ccujdfRH8&t=702s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P-5q0C31m4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUmMTfGhMjc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4euend-XfEA The above are great resources. I worked for a place that was full of people that gave off very “popular bully vibes”. It was a mix of middle aged adults that demanded to be treated like your surrogate mother and people stepped out of an Instagram feed. Not the only types. Total sociopaths abounded. My favorite people to hate were two best pals who were “odd friends”, lol, one was an intellectual narcissist and the other a somatic one. They liked to be associated with the other's inflated ego, and seem smarter and more sexually desirable due to the friendship. Yes, this WAS a “family like environment”. Has anyone here ever identified that this was the type of culture that gave you PTSD /s? (But I would believe you if it was literal).

I work in a rubber manufacturing plant, one of the biggest in the U.S. and my boss won’t let me wear a voluntary respirator

Title. According to OSHA rules this falls under “voluntary respirator use”. Their basis is that it’s not needed, our HVAC systems replace all warehouse air about every hour. It’s 10% better than quality standards. But that’s the general air, I have to operate at arms length from casted rubber that is visibly fuming. Every 5-6 minutes I perform my task and hold my breath. So when other workers complain it’s “our standards are fine and it is safe” coming from execs that only walk around machines and never have to operate. To their defense, they have to update the qualified procedure to include respirators which would require inspection and health checks on the users. A co-worker showed me the sickness/incident log and they’re 80% respiratory. I have asthma and really want to work for the company but these health issues are outweighing the (amazing) corporate benefits. Is this a failure…

If you only had a few minutes with someone to inform them about worker rights, what would they be?

I want to be a better conduit to others on common misconceptions on our rights in the workplace. I know the laws are different country/state/province etc. The one that sticks out the most is the ability to discuss wages and salary. Are there any other fundamental rights you would pass along?

How do you cope with it all?

Hey all, I'm at a point with employment where I realise I just am never going to get on with it. In therapy I'm airing out some of my issues and a lot of it just comes down to being pissed off that I spend 8 hours every weekday, making money for some asshole. And that has never sorted itself out through changing jobs. How do you cope with it? What tactics do you use to get through the day without being annoyed? I can't spend my whole life not being able to stomach the working day like this.

Untaken holiday days not rolled over or paid – found out after I had lost it

So I recently returned to work after 6 months maternity leave. Last year I worked until the middle of June. During that time because we were so busy I didn't manage to take the holiday I had accumulated in the first 6 months of the year (7.5 days). No big deal I thought. I can roll it over or be paid for it – nothing was said to me that this would be a problem. I could have tagged it on to the start of my mat leave (which was unpaid apart from 6 weeks) but I thought that would be an unnecessary complication and I actually gave birth 3 days into my mat leave anyway. Upon my return in January I was told that it wouldn't be possible to pay me for the holiday I was owed. And I could only roll over a maximum of 3 days….so last…
