I used to work at a gas station, pizza place, delivered furniture and what not with managers that are just regular people promoted to management. They aren't trained, they aren't even slightly educated in management styles and some don't have basic people skills. And of course, they are promoted by people that are also untrained. Most of the examples on this subreddit, are from those types of managers. They don't know how to manage properly, so they manage with fear or with force. And even the people above them manage the same way. For the past 10 years, I've worked for a medium-sized company with properly trained, useful managers. Not all companies have great, or even good managers, and not all the managers at my company are great, but they themselves are managed well-enough by those above them. My point is not all managers manage with fear or unethical tactics.…
My manager approved my time off a month ago. Then she texts me a few days in advance to tell me this. I already made the plans, and the day I requested is the Sunday before Christmas. Is there any law that says because I’m too new, she can’t approve it even thought she already did. I’ve been working here for three months.
Small businesses tend to have this persona that they care about their employees more and advocate for a “progressive” work culture. None of that is true, at least in my experience. After recently graduating college, I took a job for a small design company near my hometown. Not only was I criticized for not being “quirky” or “outgoing” as the rest of the group, but I was extremely overworked, underpaid and faced with unprofessional experiences, I was hired as a Social Media manager but the role quickly evolved to Customer Service, Web Maintenance, Analysts, Inventory Manager, Advertisement Manager, Email Marketer, Event coordinator, etc. The list goes on and on. I was only paid minimum wage and when gaining all these new responsibilities they said “oh, we will give you a raise based on your 1 year review”. Plot twist, I was let go the day before my 1 year. I…
I think I have finally found a place where I can share my secret that nobody knows about and which I've been keeping since 2009. Throwaway for obvious reasons. First a little bit about myself as I think it’s relevant. I’m a millennial born in 1983 in Eastern Europe and I have been living in the US since 2004. It’s also very important for you to know my world view and what shaped it. Although I grew up in post-communist country that looked at capitalism like it was a saviour that will bring happiness to all, for some reason growing up, me and my friends developed an incredibly strong hatred towards corporations, very rich people and politicians. It was so bad that I vowed to die of hunger rather than ever work for a corporation. Unfortunately, life has its ways and once the reality hit me, I have quickly sold…
Toxic work-culture traits
Someone submitted this screenshot of their “leadership” making a stand against holiday vacation scheduling.
Who can top this X-Mas gift?

Pretty self explanatory. My exact quote on MS Teams was, “If anyone else is not satisfied with their current wages or working conditions, please send me a message. Don’t let upper management tell you it’s not in the budget. We all deserve a living wage.” Got a call from HR this morning citing a zero tolerance policy for my comment as grounds for termination. I already discussed forming a union with some coworkers, but was let go before I could start getting signatures. I was unable to afford rent while working full time and will likely be evicted now. I have been reaching out to lawyers to take my case on contingency. Are there any other resources I should look into?
