So long story short: I recently discovered that my most (and only) successful software project (a pretty big web components library with 6 years of development) was being used by a famous big european corporation who did not donate a penny to me nor gave any attribution (and like 75% of their web IS heavily dependant on my project). And I don't know how many salaries or jobs positions they have saved, or how many money they have make thanks to my dedication and free work, but I felt so sick that I deleted any trace of it on the internet (I even contacted the Internet Archive though I didn't find my library there). And it was my fault because I used MIT license, which is too open and permissive. Sadly I thought I have a copy of it on my computer, but as I recently bought a new one,…
I work maintenance for the townhome/apartment complex I live in. I started about a month and some weeks ago. Recently, over the last 2-3 weeks I started clocking in 15 minutes early in order to get a jump on the day. One main reason is that our groundskeeper took a week vacation and it fell to me to do his trash pickup rounds. I got used to walking out my door 15m early and having the extra few minutes to get oriented for the day, so I continued. Last Friday I mentioned this to my “boss” (allegedly he isn't a supervisor, just acts like he is) and he got upset and went to the property manager and had her change my start time for the last 2 weeks. His reason is that “my schedule is 8:30am to 5pm.” Is this legal? Can they do that? I feel pretty shafted because…
I am looking around at other job offers now. Only to realize that the small business who offered me the job has much worse benefits then my current one. Plus given how they talked I think they have something called a “lowest cost technically acceptable” contract which worries me about the stability. To the point where I actually dont think the 10% raise is worth it. If the US had stuff like guaranteed healthcare, minium time off/sick time and some kind of guareenteed retirement I would totally consider this offer but I can't work for a place with less PTO and no 401k match.
I was hired full time at four days a week. Now I’m scheduled 3 days a week with shorter hours each day. Is there any suggestions to not be “forced” to quit? Or receiving partial unemployment?
I work at the Mack Plant in Detroit. Made a song for the UAW strike. Working class folks gotta even out this inequality, and bows our chance! Here’s the audio version. Makes for some good break-room entertainment! https://artists.landr.com/064837064659
This is mostly just a rant I work in a factory and I used to never get sick until a couple months ago when everyone caught super covid. Everyone just comes to work sick because we’ve all used up our sick and vacation time being ill. Last month me and a couple people caught RSV and somebodys kid had to be hospitalized. There is always 10+ people coughing, snorting, drinking tea, and chugging dayquil in a given day. People leave their snot rags laying around and never wash their hands after blowing their nose. I don’t go anywhere but work, mostly i only get a few days break of feeling horrible before i get sick again. I always try to wash my hands and avoid touching my face, wear a mask, wipe stuff down after i touch it, but it’s useless because nobody else cares for hygiene. I feel like…
I hate my job. My company is actively worsening my conditions so I quit without any compensation. I feel every minute I spend in their grey office, is a minute I will never get back. Another minute away from my wife and kid. Lots of wasted hours every week. I applied to hundreds of job offers without success. However, I don't think I would feel any better in another company. My wife feels the same with her job. We had a wonderful baby recently and separating from her, because of this stupid system, hurts a lot. We are lucky we already have a place and no debts, so we don't really have big expenses. We are 30ish and we don't imagine ourselves in the grind machine until we retire in another 30 years. We have some earnings so paying for our kid's future education is not a problem. I can…
Overtime and Oncall in TX.
Does anyone have any experience in trying to get a company operating in TX to pat compensation for being on an Oncall rotation TX? My scenario is every three week in our small IT/Datacenter team I’m Oncall. Requirements being if called upon by the monitoring system I drop everything and go to work. No travel, and I usually don’t plan any events. My assumption is that since I have to alter my life in a way that gives up personal freedoms to travel or engage activities that would justify compensation. My fear is that TX is not worker friendly so I’m out of luck.
After working remote for three years, we are now being required to come into the office for days a week per corporate guidelines. For the next three years, our headquarters is in the process of demolition and reconstruction. Almost everyone is being impacted by noise of workers in the ceiling, walls being torn down, jackhammers going, the constant dust and debris, and the windows have been blocked off, barring any natural light in the office. There have been so many emails thanking us for our patience with the noise and construction, and to keep moving forward working in office BUT if some days are harder than others get permission from your supervisor to work from home for that day but to please make an effort to come in. Oh and they keep emailing saying “we are monitoring the air quality and will let you know if there are any changes”.…
