Let’s stop asking kids what they want to be when they grow up.

Why do we do this? I think a lot of it Is conditioning and kids can be horrible to have conversations with (other people/strangers kids). But I’ve started asking ‘what would you change when you’re a grown up’ Or ‘When you’re grown, what would you like to create’. Let’s ask them what they do for fun, what would they make better. I mean, the ideas will mostly be unattainable but if you can’t dream what’s the point. Let’s focus on the possible, not the inevitable.

Afraid of quitting my job

Sorry in advance if it sounds stupid but I really hope to find some advice here. I've been working only month and a half at the new place and I already want to quit so badly. Not only I hate the essence of my new job, but I also very dislike the office conditions and my boss. My new job makes my life miserable. I wake up feeling anxious every day. I can't even relax during my lunch break. I'd rather quiet quit my job, but my boss is rather impatient and irritable. If she finds out I underperform, she will reprimand me severely. My boss is very blunt and I'm afraid of being verbally abused. I want to officially quit my job but due to my social anxiety I'm very, very afraid of telling everyone about it, especially my boss. I think everyone will see me as traitor and…

I sent my resignation letter giving them 3 months heads up but I am terrified of the questions to come

I work in a very small company very “family oriented” and am close to everyone here. I sent my resignation giving them three months to get through the holidays with them. I don't have a job lined up but I absolutely have to get out of here. We cannot find staff and they overworked the people they have, don't pay me enough, and one of the women in the company is so demeaning towards me that it stresses me out daily. I am going to lie and say I'm set up for a position at my husband's company, which I kind of am but haven't actually been offered the position. I don't want to end things on a negative note so that's why I just want to say it's because of a job offer but I suck at lying and am afraid of them pestering me about the reason for…

Advice for international worker

My husband is working internationally with a job based in Seattle. Without giving too many details away, he’s paid very low ($15/hr) and continuously asked to work more hours. Part of the job is content creation. The employer offers no benefits, such as pto, sick leave, or retirement. He’s considering leaving the company bc of the constant pressure to work more and more, with no benefits offered. If he leaves, can he take the content he’s created with him? I know this isn’t the place for legal advice, but I’m just curious if that’s something he could do. Important side note, he has been considering creating his own company in the field as he has the educational background to succeed.

Why do folks outside the US keep asking if it is really that bad?

I see a lot of posts on this here. Yes, work is bad in the US and people are mistreated all the time. You can read about it from reputable journals, not just Reddit anecdotes. Congratulations, your country offers vacation and decent salaries and treats people like human beings and whatnot. Yes, we would like that too. Do a little research before being dismissive.

Hate how every life improvement depends on my job and collapses if things don’t work out.

I hate how everything I want to do is so tied up to work.Any life improvement I want to do requires money and a job. If my job gets stressful, the panic of getting fired kills my motivation to work out, go on dates, learn new skills, improve my mental health, etc. These aren't even big things liek expensive vacations or buying yachts. Just basic things. I'm laying there in bed all day, and everything feels so aritifical and fake. They keep you trapped in that fear of dropping down the lowest level of Maslows hierarchy. They want you to know that you are a subhuman if you lose your job and you can never escape that basic subsistence level. In my own life I've seen the worst part is that it all hinges on how my boss is feeling, how well I get along with the team, and doing…

Of course my boss is out of touch and they only noticed how hard it was out there because they saw the price of mayonnaise went up at Costco and gave the whole staff $100 gift cards for groceries… that’s it just wanted to share how absurd the mind of the owning class is

Shouldn’t these technological advancements make our work hours shorter?

TLDR: New tech advancements aren't making our lives easier, in fact, they add more strain to our worklife. And I'm frustrated to see in every platform professionals raving about them. It's infuriating, truly infuriating, to see the rapid rise of technology – computers, cellphones, AI, and the exciting glimpse into the near future with quantum computing. But despite these huge advancements, we're still stuck working over 40 hours a week and struggling to make enough money to get by. Demanding higher productivity within these grueling hours is just plain disrespectful to us as workers. And to top it off, the benefits of all this fancy tech rarely reach the everyday person. It's the big companies and wealthy individuals who reap the rewards. Shouldn't we, the ones doing the hard work, stand up and ask for shorter work hours or fair pay that matches the incredible amount of work we do?…
