Long time lurker first time poster. I think this fits here. If not please remove So this just happened in my area. A certain nationwide sandwich franchisee decided they were going to play fast and loose with labor laws. Like taking advantage of young people working their first jobs, not paying OT or no paying at all for that matter, among a laundrey list of other things. Well thanks to those same young people who got educated about their rights, the owners of three franchise stores has lost their case and must pay out $1 million and sell there businesses. Want to play games with your workers it’s gonna cost you. Keep in mind they were young and in what a lot of people would consider a “low end” job. But they stood up and together they brought that thief of an owner to justice. Know your rights!
Throwaway account, obv. About a decade a go, I was unexpectedly let go from my position at a family-run business where politicks played *more* than a large hand in my departure. So, I immediately reached out to some contacts, and had an interview for a position at an international media organization with a branch in my area the same day. In my haste to secure new employment, I ignored some immediate red flags, including my future manager telling me that “We don't do anything exciting here. Heck, some guys don't even leave their desks all day unless it's to use the can.”. Yet, I was given an offer, and I took it. More pay with the promise of less work and promised annual bonuses? How could I not? My first day was was a flurry of HR meetings and trainings, with little interaction with my actual boss. The second day…
Throwaway for obvious reasons Anyway, I was let go from my IT position two weeks ago. Was told “poor performance” in the video call. This despite having no previous poor reviews, no one on ones since May, and no actual manager between May and about a month ago. Having talked to my previous manager (who was let go with the same thing cited), and hearing about others who were let go the same day, it's becoming obvious that this was a round of layoffs poorly disguised in an attempt to not pay any severance. Here's the kicker. From late-2021 onwards, I have been living outside the US, in a country where the company has no legal presence. I have been getting paid as an employee, not a contractor that entire time. I'm hoping someone smarter than I am here knows of a way I can use this to bite…
They fired my GF and now
They fired my GF, and now… My girlfriend worked for a company for a while, but they fired her because of changing strategies. They removed all document in my GF's laptop. Yesterday, they found out there was important information in that laptop and asked my GF to bring the laptop for recovery information. Does she have to do this?
Until recently, I worked for a “pre-ipo” tech company. My manager consistently praised the substance of my work and the only feedback given was that I was “not an alpha” like her, and how she “doesn’t let anyone talk in the meetings”, make every meeting “my” meeting, and telling me that “these people don’t listen unless you talk loud”. What truly shocked me on how I was fired. My manager crafted a deceptive meeting invitation, detailing a visit from the CFO and the supposed review of an upcoming conference, only to tell me that sole purpose of the meeting was to fire me. I am still processing the PTSD this sudden surprise caused me. I am aware of at-will employment but I just can't wrap my head around why companies feel the need to go to great lengths to blindside their employees when firing them
Stupidest corporate decision I've ever heard. The company I work for now was paying hundreds of dollars per day to have an ad on Linkedin. Now that I work there, I barely make 100 per day. Not sure how to feel about this.
A system that humanity has to run on should be a system where everyone helps eachother, treats eachother the same and sees everyone as family. After all we are all human and in my eyes life shouldn't be stressful. The system that's in place now just causes unhappiness, repetitiveness, greed and distance within humanity. Why have people allowed this to go on for so long and haven't suggested different ways for the human race to live? Why do we just accept and go along with it all?
I applied for a role at a small-medium company recently and received a missed call late Saturday afternoon. A voice mail came through later that evening (must have been out of signal) and it was said company trying to organise an interview. I am being overly cautious or is it a red flag/a lack of respect on boundaries to call someone on a Saturday evening about a job? The job does involve some occasional weekend work but mornings only. How would be the best way to respond? Im a strong believer on work life balance and boundaries and after a previous overbearing boss, im very cautious
Rejected by over 600 jobs
Pls tell me what to look for as I don’t understand why this is happening! Ive never been rejected for the most basic roles before. I did my police check and an RCMP check but I am not finding anything bad on me. Is there something or some specific tool or app that companies research now before they even schedule an interview to just automatically decline me? IPS: I have applied to over 600 jobs and nothing! Is it just bad timing?
Interview Red Flags…Run Away!!
Ive done my fair share of interviews and I've noticed that shitty companies tend to do a lot of the same tricks. If anyone says any of these things to you in an interview, cut it right there and walk. The odds of it being a good fit are about as good as the odds of you becoming the next Queen of England (as in pretty darn low). “We work hard and play harder.” This means they work constantly, have no life outside of work and in their free time they drown their pain in mass amounts of alcohol. “We're like a family here.” If it's an abusive family then sure, you're like a family. It's like you put up with your shitty relatives out of familial love and obligation so maybe you'll do the same for your shitty supervisor. “What's the absolute bare minimum you're willing to accept foe…
