My girlfriend works part time, previously full time, for a local daycare that is very mismanaged, very toxic, and very corrupt. I took her to get breakfast and deposit her paycheck this morning, and I noticed on her paystub that her paycheck was deducted for “Training” and “Holiday”.
I asked her about it, and her explanation was that 9 or so months ago, she had to read some manual/handbook for work. I asked her why she is having to pay for that, and why is she having to pay for it months later, and she said they are probably having her pay for the materials and it is a recurring charge. I asked her how long she read total, she said 4 hours.
I explained to her that they should NOT be charging her for her own training materials, they should in fact be paying her for her time spent reading for work, even if she read at home. Training is the expense of the employer, not the employee. You do not pay for your own training, whether time or materials, the employer pays you.
And then the -$30 for Holiday? She doesn’t even know what that is for. And just for perspective, the total deducted is roughly 10% of her net paycheck. Are these deductions even legal? Should we report this to the department of labor or anywhere else? This is absolutely absurd to me, and it infuriates me how she is having money taken out of her paycheck for training and then for holiday.
If any of you have any advise on how to handle this, or what we should do, or if any of you know the legality of this situation, if anything at all, please let me know.
