I know we’re supposed to take pride in our work, regardless of the job, but I can’t stand working with people who take treat our crap, minimum wage job like it’s the most important thing in the world. Most of the time they don’t even do it because they’re prideful, but because they either wanna kiss up to the boss or they’re insecure about being grown adults working a job that a teenager could get.
I recently started working at a cafe inside of a chain retail store. The job isn’t too hard, but the management is starting to get under my skin. My manager is a 50-something year old woman and her ego makes her absolutely insufferable to work with. I dread going to any shift that we’re both scheduled on. She runs the cafe like it’s the Navy. She’s extremely anal about everything to the point where it comes off as extra. She’s always saying how it’s “her” cafe (it’s not, the cooperation owns it, but I let her pretend) and even when she’s clocked out, she’s watching us through a camera when she goes home. She’s working a little too hard for that $17 an hour.
There was an incident on my second day where I ate a bagel there not knowing that I had to pay for it (I thought it was free because my colleague offered it to me). Another manager, who I also despise, reprimanded me and told me I had to throw it out, which I did. Problem solved. My next shift, she pulls me into an office and sits me down. She says, “you know why you’re here?” I say no. She then goes “what happened with the bagel?”. I actually wanted to slap her. The whole thing was so extra. I was already spoken to about it and I already apologized and said it won’t happen again. So why did she pull me into an office? Because she has an ego and she wants to act like she has an actual professional job.
I think I’m going to be looking for another job soon. I’ll miss my colleagues but I don’t feel like entertaining the management’s delusions anymore. Fuck that.
