Permissive PTO Plans

Hello Redditors!! I work for a company that uses a permissive PTO plan. We don’t accrue PTO, we basically just request it and hope the manager approves it. I had never heard of this before working here, but apparently it is becoming more common among companies. It is absolutely a ploy to try make employees feel like they don’t really have PTO to use, thus use less than if we were allotted it. And no payout upon leaving the company, of course. My question/concern with my company is that they have sent us how much PTO we have used vs how much we would have if we were actually allotted it like normal, indicating we should be using that much PTO.

I feel like this is shady. Under this plan, because you can use it for sick time, means state sick time laws don’t apply. So if they aren’t separating what we are using for sick time, and telling us how much PTO we should be using as if were a normal plan… doesn’t that negate the whole purpose of a permissive PTO plan?

Am I crazy, or am I on to something here? Does it not even matter because they don’t technically have to give us anything at all? I truly have no idea, so I would love to hear if people have experience with this or what you all think. Thanks for reading, friends. 🙂
