Is it illegal for an employer to do or not do these things? This is a family-owned and managed retail business, with maybe about 8-15 employees tops.
None of the employees have access to look at their own time cards, we each have to personally ask the owners/manager to print out our time cards, and if/when they finally do, they’ve been printed out using Microsoft Word instead of via the actual program that’s on the systems here, called The Edge.
We’ve noticed our paychecks will sometimes come out short, and we can’t even look back to see if there were errors on our time cards. They’ve told us ‘if they gave us permissions in the systems to view our own time cards, then we’d be able to view EVERYONE’s time cards,’ which doesn’t sound right, assuming they know how to use the program to give out specific permissions for certain employees vs total access to whoever just whoever.
There are no genuine employee/employer policies, and their “policies” change from day to day to fit their own needs. We have no printed policies or anything to reference, other than one sheet on how the sales commission is broken down and a dress code. There is no regular payout of commissions, it just seems to be whenever they remember/feel like tossing something into our paychecks regardless of if we meet numbers. They purposely charge back against the repair shop/side of the store to be sure there are limited to no profits for the people in there to be paid commissions on, despite the ridiculously high profit margin they have on their repair charges for outside merchandise being brought in, vs the ‘services under warranty’ they give out to people that bought merch in the store here.
There are some other issues that are fairly regular but those are the most noticeable things affecting the employees here negatively, aside from the weird family relationship/politics and lack of structure for employees.
Is there anything that can/should be done here? This place has a fairly regular turnover because of these issues not being addressed or resolved.
