Just a few off the top of my head but you guys can add to these. I think this is a good discussion to learn how to take some of the power back from employers by having a voice at the very beginning.
- Pay rate and pay increases overtime.
- Vacation time.
- Staffing: Are you understaffed?
- Do you promote from within?
- How long have you worked your position? (this could be an indicator of movement in the company or region; if they have been there for over 5 years in a non-corporate adjacent region they aren’t going anywhere and don’t expect you to within the region most likely)
- Does corporate recruit from within? I was told by Target that store leadership doesn’t usually get considered for corporate positions. This different from Dillard’s or WalMart, their model is to recruit from within.
- For sales positions (esp retail) ask about conversion, does the store meet goals, inventory levels, and preferred credit history of the clients.
*All you’re doing is getting a feel of how well the person interviewing you knows their own job. This is a fair concern. Just act excited, curious, and motivated.
All in all interviews should be two-sided. Some interviewers will like this engagement which in my opinion is a good sign. Others will feel challenged which is, in my opinion, shows a lack of confidence or experience which is definitely not a good sign if they are potentially supervising you.
