Some factors you should know before reading.

  1. THIS IS A RANT. Stop now if you don't want your time wasted.
  2. I think we have all been there, so don't think you haven't had these exact thoughts.
  3. Yes, I know boomers are going to want to retaliate to this post. Just know this, I don't expect something for nothing and I don't think anything will be handed to me. We all know that back in your day, a person just needed drive and gumption to get a job. Now you're just gatekeeping jobs that almost anyone could do with ease. SO PLEASE RETIRE ALREADY SO WE CAN HAVE YOUR EASY JOBS. If you want to prove me wrong, convert a word document to a PDF and then back.
  4. I rewrite my entire resume to match the job description and use ATS analysis. I have had several colleagues and resume builders look over my resume. So no, it's not my resume.
  5. Yes, I have taken the skills tests offered by company's and aced them. Still no word. Hmm….maybe my perfect score intimidated them. Well NEWS FLASH, I am coming for your job.
  6. I am not talking about specialized industries (doctor, lawyer, engineer, some trades, etc.). This is aimed at the jobs with titles such as; Account Managers, Project Scheduler, Account Executives, Fulfillment Leaders, Help Desk (I, II, or III), Data Entry Specialist (like wtf is a data entry specialist? Someone who is special and can enter data?), Business Development Rep, and so on.

I hate that I am turned down for jobs that pay really well that someone without a brain could do. If you really think a job is complex, look up the definition of the job. You'll be dumbfounded that you were turned down. I don't understand when a company says, “We do not think you have the qualifications for this job” aka “We have decided to pursue….blah blah blah”. Most jobs are not hard. They are made out to be hard. Unless it's a specialized field, YOUR JOB ISN'T HARD. I think most people want to feel special and needed, so they exaggerate the job.

Job experience on a resume is a waste of time. Employers lie on job descriptions/requirements and applicants lie or at least exaggerate on resumes. Resumes are a literal waste of time. They are the same idea and level of importance as a popularity contest in high school. Also, recruiters or those who are reading your resume have no intelligence. They can't make the connection between a previous job in a different industry and see the transferable skills. You have to spell it out for them. ATS is no different. It's actually worse. Would making a cops robots make sense? How about a therapist? Then neither should the person who reads resumes. They need a (intelligent) human element to reason and read between the lines to see the connections.

I really want to just put these 3 lines on my resume,

  1. Yes, I can do the job I am applying for. I wouldn't be here if I knew I couldn't.
  2. GIVE THE LITERAL F'N DEFINITION OF TRANSFERABLE SKILLS BECAUSE RECRUITERS AND ATS OBVIOUSLY DON'T KNOW IT.
  3. List of my certs because they should be worth something even without the unfathomable number of years of experience that you are requiring for an ENTRY LEVEL JOB.

Current methods show that a great resume and a super charismatic person with personal ties can get a dumb person a job, but an okay resume and an introverted person with no personal ties will leave the perfect candidate out… Is it not time to change hiring methods?! If they are truly worried about job turnover, then they should hire the person who is qualified, not the person that knew someone.

If you got this far and still want to retaliate like the little keyboard warrior you know you are, then go for it. You deserve it.
