Like many of you, I was laid off. It was back in September for me. I’ve been applying like crazy and I had an interview with a place yesterday. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t shine in interviews but let me go through their list of requirements.
- 10+ years of experience in software testing. – 7 years
- This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent. – I just ignore this one
- Hands on experience in executing automation test suites in Selenium or other automation tools and analyzing results. – Jest
- Thorough understanding of QA methodology and best practices
- Experience in testing IOS and Android applications.
- Experience with testing web-based software.
- Experience in analyzing logs and debugging using browser debugging tools.
- Hands on experience with testing, analyzing and troubleshooting communication between front-end and API / Web Services.
- Expert level knowledge and hands-on experience in creating test plans and writing test cases.
- Experience in testing user stories / features, API and doing regression testing.
Preferred to have skills:
- Experience in leading QA teams is a plus
- Experience in testing Software interacting with hardware
- Experience in Testing and Qualifying Consumer Electronics Products
To top it off, during the interview they mention that this would actually be a 100% manual testing role. 99% of my 7 years has been manual testing so what’s the problem? Was it because I only have 7 years experience and not 10? Did I not make you laugh? Were you hangry?
I was imagining working for this place and looking forward to it. It was going to be double the salary of my last place. The HR lady I spoke with sounded genuinely enthused about the place (I know this could’ve been performative though). I found out the day before a YouTuber couple I like are sponsored by the company. I did all the right things and checked all the boxes. I did the best I could but just because I’m awkward and say um am I not getting hired?
I’m trying to stay positive but after having looking for a job be my job for the past month and a half and completing nearly 200 applications, it gets draining. It sucks trying to reach these impossible standards and jump through these arbitrary hoops for them just so I can afford food and shelter.
