Redundancy Empty Gestures

I had a meeting last week saying my position was being considered for redundancy and to try keep me employed I was asked if I wanted to choose from another one of the 8 roles the company has going. I can't do any of them as they're all quite senior positions. All activity was to be halted until after another meeting that's supposed to take place today. In our Slack channel someone was just promoted to one of the positions that was supposed to be available. Should I ask to “apply” for that role? I've got an official letter stating the reason I'm being considered for redundancy was because a retainer has fallen below a certain amount but I had a wee look at our client database and it's way above what they stated.
