Remote work fixed my Tourette syndrome suffering friend’s career

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I’m a strong believer in remote work when it is possible, which is directly in conflict with some big butt-in-chair companies. I have a friend that has two things that they had suspected were holding them back for a long time – being short (5’2” man) and having a mild Tourette’s tick that is sort like of wheezing while clearing your throat. I have a friend that has two things that they had suspected were holding them back for a long time – being short (5’2” man) and having a mild Tourette’s tick that is sort like of wheezing while clearing your throat.

While being a very high performer at a large software corporation, he was typically passed up for any opportunities despite always getting an “exceeds expectations.” A couple years ago he left his 15 year job for a full time remote company – there is another requirement for anyone to go into the office, although they do own one. 35% pay increase and stock from the get-go.

He’s gotten a 10% raise twice and promoted, despite the talent pool being roughly the same as the company he left. He swears up and down it’s because he can use push-to-talk in meetings, which effectively stops anyone from knowing he has Tourette’s. And to a lesser extent he claims not being able to see he is short also plays into it, which I believe. Remote work has leveled the playing field for him and he deserves it.

I hope everyone continues to fight for remote work for many reasons, but this is another one.
