Anyways, I (19 M) had applied four times last year while living in a youth shelter. I had worked at a McDonalds in my hometown and was given a really good reference plus some personal references. This year I got two emails from the managers asking for an application because I assume they can't hold any staff down. I've had several friends who have worked there, three from the shelter that quit due to a toxic work environment.
After that, I guess they must have had a bad taste in their mouth about the shelter because my friend- who I will refer to as 'A'- had informed me that they actively decline applications from homeless people because of frustration with their work ethic. Yuck.
This year I finally moved out of the shelter on a housing voucher. Now that I no longer live there, I suppose they must have heard word about it and sent me emails twice in the past month. I sent an email back, stating:
” Hello,
I had applied four times last year. My first interview I walked through a blizzard to make it and was declined the job to which I could only presume was due to personal references. The other three times I was declined as well. I have been told by staff I know who have worked there that I was not hired and multiple other people were not hired because of the location they lived in, the youth shelter Shaw House. This is an illegal practice and I have no interest in joining a company that had actively discriminated against me when I was trying to actively leave a situation I never wanted to be in in the first place. Thank you for your offer, but I am also enrolled in college full time and have no interest either in making time in my schedule to accommodate your lack of staff.
