I work at a start up based in NYC but I live in Philadelphia. I was hired during the pandemic stating that they wanted to build out my department based in Philly. Well fast forward two years, everyone who was local in my department has quit and now all their replacements are scattered remotely.
They opened a local office in Sept, mostly because the COO lives in town and pushed for it. I went three times realized I was spending the whole day on Zoom anyway and now I only go when I need to pick up mail. I just got a call from my boss telling me that the COO is pissed at me because he was at the office and didn’t see me. Told me it is a corporate mandate & I need to follow directions.
But honestly, I don’t care. My boss lives in Colorado every else I work with lives in NYC, TX, & FL. There are only 15 employees who are local and all work in departments I have no interaction with. Even the COO who cares so much about me being there didn’t talk to me when we were in the office together that one day and just watched Fox News without headphones on his second screen. Why would I waste my time commuting when I already work like 12 hours a day in a Company where people regularly put 7:30pm meetings on the calendar.
I don’t even care about repercussions because they are about to have their 4th RIFF in a year and they are running out of people to actually do the work the work the Company needs to the point where my boss said my time off is being restricted because there is literally no one who has the skill to cover for me.
Based on the Company’s cash position, they may be bankrupt within a year so worry about that and not if I am sitting in a half empty cold office with some random dude from IT.
I have 6 months of living expenses saved & am riding this job till they collapse and then taking a short break after. Don’t annoy me enough to just leave.
