Requesting off for elective surgery

I'm trying to pull the trigger on breast reduction surgery. I've got documented recurring back issues, but just started this new job (state substitute). We've got a full staff right now and I know at least 2 other teachers aid are pursuing substitute certifications so eventually there would be trained people able to fill my spot when I'm out. With the way Summer school works, the longest period I have off work is 2 weeks. I'd have to wait a full year to use that but it's a possibility. Doc recommended downtime is bed rest for 3 weeks (full recovery 2-3mo) but my close friends that have had it say they've been up and back to work as soon as 1.5 weeks. So I've got a few questions- Should I even go into any detail about what sort of surgery it is? I feel like people will view breast reduction…

So I've got a few questions-
Should I even go into any detail about what sort of surgery it is? I feel like people will view breast reduction as completely cosmetic, and it isn't. Not for me. Should I just say it's private but recommended by my doctor? Sure it's elective but it will help some real health conditions I have. I've never had a surgery like this and just feel weird about the whole thing. I don't want to be denied time off to recover because my supervisor doesn't think I need surgery or something. What have you experienced? They're fairly understanding at work so far.
