“Salaried”

Landed my first salaried job a few months ago, and was thrilled at the prospect of a guaranteed paycheck. Because I’m still in my 90 day trial period, I haven’t accrued PTO. So tomorrow, when I have to take time off for a medical appointment, it will be unpaid. I’m… struggling to understand this, as it indicates that I am actually hourly with a “salary” that’s just an estimate based on a 40 hr/work schedule. When I come in early, work through lunch, or stay a few minutes late, no one is counting hours. But when I have to go somewhere for two hours, my pay is withheld? Is that just the shitty tradeoff with a “9-5” type of job, or is this abnormal? Also, how many PTO days are average for my fellow American workers in a given year, in an office setting? Because I get 6 per year…
