Same work, New job, No joy

Has anyone else been in the place I’m in now? How did you cope? I worked for an insurance/financial institution for 16 years. Out of nowhere they “sold” our department to an overseas outsourcing company. Said company gave us all 1 year contracts. We all saw the writing on the wall. Anyone of value jumped ship early, myself included. I put my resume out and found work quickly doing the same type of work. It’s the only way I know to bring in anywhere near the same income & benefits. I’m now with a company doing the same thing I did for 16 years. This new company likes to talk just like my old company.

Lots of “We’re a great place to work!” Rah-rah. I can’t find a way to believe any of it. I’m jaded. I ignore anyone that isn’t in my direct team. At the office, I walk with headphones and make zero eye contact if I have to leave my desk.

I just can’t find the capacity to put in more than the minimum amount of effort at work.

I’m salary, I still work around 45hrs a week, take on-call weeks and work some weekends for change control. I don’t feel like I’m lazy. I work.

My projects take longer to complete than some of my co-workers because I won’t work past 5:30p and I don’t work anywhere near as quickly.

I’d much rather put effort into being with my wife & kids. Is this what the rest of my career will be?
