I today saved my company roughly 3% of their TOTAL worth. This small company is worth ~$10,000,000.00 so I was told. We were initially looking at disposing of some of our waste and was quoted a charge of roughly $550,000.00 to dispose of some waste in a VERY niche market. Like so niche probably less than 40 companies do this waste disposal.
I took it upon myself to start looking to help out with this project and reached out to nearly 30 places. So many in fact that I ran out of places to contact for a quote that I could locate in the USA.
After this I arranged a guy to drive two states away to see our problem first hand. After such visit he quoted us 250k cheaper than the next cheapest competitor and is willing to handle EVERYTHING whereas the next leading place just arranges pick up and we handle loading and stuff. I thought I had it locked in until supervision wanted me to negotiate. I stalled for a month or so as I was afraid of offending this other business.
Today my supervisor was being testy and wanted me to email asking for even cheaper after he and another supervisor had told the guy he was by far the cheapest. I did so half hoping he emailed back telling us to get lost. To my surprise he emailed back a second quote 50k cheaper bringing the total to over 300k I have saved this small company in its first quarter.
I inquired about a 3% bonus of the saved amount and was told “that’s not how this works” and got laughed at. Later I was told “good job though man”. I essentially paid for my salary since being with the company the past 2 years and for the next roughly 5.5 years if my pay stays the same. That “good job though man” is really life changing for me though /sarcasm. I’ll remember that for the rest of my life but not in a good way.
Screw these companies and supervisors. It’s my contact and I have half the mind to go in tomorrow hand in my resignation and tell the guy I’ve been emailing we are no longer interested in utilizing his company and shaft mine. The only reason I won’t is because he had nothing to do with it and I won’t burn that bridge with him. I’ll get him paid his 250k and possibly see about going to work for him.
