Senior level employee argued I shouldn’t be hourly worker

During an introductory lunch with a new employee, an office principal proceeded to argue that the Fair Labor Standards Act shouldn’t be a thing and that I, along with the new employee, should petition to be salaried employees. This is a job that frequently requires overtime work and occasionally weekend work (if the project has enough money to cover the overtime). Should I be concerned? Is this worth complaining to HR about? I tried to explain to him that the law is made to protect workers and help workers assert boundaries.
