Should I / How to ask for a raise/position change

Hi all! Scroll for the TLDR but if you want the full details here It goes – So last year I was onboarded at my current company as an Human Resources Intern. The work is pretty easy and stuff. Most of the work is stuff I’ve already known how to do or stuff I picked up quickly. It was only supposed to be a 4 month internship but here we are approaching my 1 year anniversary in 1 week. They liked me I suppose because they kept extending my internship and I gladly accepted because I like the place and the job market is bad. And honestly I didn’t want to have to look for another job that’s a job in its self with zero pay. Aside from all that thought I wanted to ask for a position change and a raise. Hi all!

So last year I was onboarded at my current company as an Human Resources Intern.

Do you think that is reasonable. I was thinking I ask to be hired on permanently ( currently a contractor) as an HR assistant and be paid 35k-40k salary and work 35 hours a week ( I currently make $16.75 and work 30hrs a week).

Is this reasonable? All be it last year $16.50 felt okay financially but now things are kind of tight. Amidst the terrible job market and with lay offs I’m kind of scared to ask my boss. My biggest fear is they think I’m asking for too much or want too much and find some kind of reason to get me off the team and fire me.

What do you think Reddit go for it or be grateful for the job and do my best budgeting stricter?

Some other things to consider is I don’t have any PTO now so if they hire me permanently they’d have to give me some. They also have a tuition reimbursement program so if they hire me permanently they’d have to offer that to me as well. My degree is in HR and would qualify for 6,000 in reimbursement so it’d be a great help. Especially considering I’m paying for my whole education myself right now🥲. Mentioning this for more context and insight. I’m thinking because of this they might not want to give me a permanent role. ( Most people in the company are done with school so they don’t use the tuition reimbursement program. So all and all it’s like I’m asking for a pay increase and 6k in benefits.)

TLDR:
Started as contract/temp worker as an HR Intern at a company and was only supposed to intern 4 months & get paid $16.50 an hour. They kept extending the Internship & it has now reached 1 year. Wondering if I should as for a raise and position change. Thinking to ask for 35k-45k and position change to HR assistant and be a permanent employee. Hiring me permanent would also require them to give me company benefits. Is this reasonable or too much of an ask?
