I have been working for a small furniture/appliance store in the southern United States for over 2 and a half years. The people who own the company are pretty much the definition of the typical “good ol' boy”. Conservative, white men, with a lot of money. The drinking culture here is horrendous. The owners and several managers often leave the store for hours at a time to go to a local bar and come back tipsy while “working” (if you could call it that). They recently renovated our conference room and it looks amazing…minus the part where employees aren't even allowed in there. They have a cabinet full of liquor, a minifridge full of beer, and even put thumb print locks on the door so only managers can get in. My desk is close by and I can hear glasses clanking and loud laughter all through out the day. It's just a “normal” thing at this place.
It's gotten to the point where I'm just fed up with how it's acceptable that the people who are supposed to be in charge are allowed to be at work under the influence. I had an employee evaluation a month ago that went horribly. My manager was under the influence when she gave me my review. Here's why it went horribly:
I was given the task of ordering some wall tiles for one of our showrooms. I was being pushed to order the tiles the day I was told about the task so they'd be in for an event we were having next month. I find what I thought were the correct tiles – they arrived very quickly. Only issue was they were shiny instead of matte. Because they were wrong, was was told I am on a 60 day probation and they'd “re-evaluate” my pay.
I am an administrative assistant. I do not order tiles, nor have I ever in my entire life.
We have no HR department. So here I am stuck at this dead end job barely scraping by, while also on a 60 day probation. Normal everyday work things /s
