I work as a crisis therapist for a large medical corporation. Despite the size of the organization, our team is pretty small and our staffing is usually pretty lean. My manager is also the ABSOLUTE WORST at scheduling, so my recent schedule was working 4 10-hour overnight shifts, having a single day off, and then being on for 3 13-hour overnight shifts. This is pretty routine at this point despite myself and other colleagues telling him that this is stressful and exhausting.
I've been sick for 2+ weeks. I've been to Urgent Care twice now and they still don'tknow what I have. I'm on my second round of antibiotics. Honestly, I feel like garbage and probably look pretty awful too. I'm exhausted, my throat is painfully swollen, I have intense sinus pressure and drainage. Swallowing feels like I'm eating glass. I'm definitely NOT doing well and have been communicating with my manager about it.
Today was my 2nd Urgent Care visit and the doctor told me to stay home and rest well for the remainder of the week. I informed my manager and was told to make sure I got a physician's note and that this will count as an unplanned absence for which I'll be written up.
I'm pretty miffed about this. It isn't like I can plan being sick! That's what “sick time” is there for! Not to mention working for a large medical group, you would hope they would prioritize their employees' health.
