I work at a movie theater on the weekends, do my full-time job on the weekdays. At the end of the day I don’t even really need this job, but I’m ranting on behalf of everyone else.
Management keeps sending out angry emails about people calling out. And if it was a fair and equitable work space, I would totally get that. They gave you the hours and you should be grateful under the right circumstance.
But when they get busy, they’ll cut shifts left and right. And while they’re not technically allowed to make you leave, they’ll pressure you to no end to make the decision yourself, and you’re more or less threatened with less shifts next week if you get on management’s bad side.
Some people really need that extra source of income. And it’s not like they pay us much (minimum wage, barely livable). Also, if we close early, we have to leave right then and there and not get the hours listed. If it says a 9 hour shift, but you end up closing shop at 11:30, you’ll get paid for 7 with no chance to make it up.
So yeah. If you don’t want people calling out all the time, maybe don’t communicate to your employees that the hours they were promised are totally expendable. I have no sympathy, and I’m not a guy to frequently call out.
